1. O strength and stay upholding all creation, Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide, Yet day by day the light in due gradation From hour to hour through all its changes guide: 2. Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending, An eve untouched by shadows of decay, The brightness of a holy death-bed blending With dawning glories of th’ eternal day. 3. Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving, And thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word, Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living Now and to endless ages art adored. Amen.

Psalmus 88 (2,19)

Mercy and truth * shall go before thy face, O Lord.

The mercies of the Lord * I will sing for ever.

  1. In generatiónem et generatiónem * annuntiábo veritátem tuam in ore meo.

    2. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth * to generation and generation.

  2. Quóniam dixísti: In ætérnum misericórdia ædificábitur in cælis: * præparábitur véritas tua in eis.

    3. For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: * thy truth shall be prepared in them.

  3. Dispósui testaméntum eléctis meis, † jurávi David, servo meo: * Usque in ætérnum præparábo semen tuum.

    4. I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant: * Thy seed will I settle for ever.

  4. Et ædificábo in generatiónem et generatiónem * sedem tuam.

    5. And I will build up thy throne * unto generation and generation.

  5. Confitebúntur cæli mirabília tua, Dómine, * étenim veritátem tuam in ecclésia sanctórum.

    6. The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: * and thy truth in the church of the saints.

  6. Quóniam quis in núbibus æquábitur Dómino: * símilis erit Deo in fíliis Dei?

    7. For who in the clouds can be compared to the Lord: * or who among the sons of God shall be like to God?

  7. Deus, qui glorificátur in consílio sanctórum: * magnus et terríbilis super omnes qui in circúitu ejus sunt.

    8. God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints: * great and terrible above all them that are about him.

  8. Dómine, Deus virtútum, quis símilis tibi? * potens es, Dómine, et véritas tua in circúitu tuo.

    9. O Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? * thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee.

  9. Tu domináris potestáti maris: * motum autem flúctuum ejus tu mítigas.

    10. Thou rulest the power of the sea: * and appeasest the motion of the waves thereof.

  10. Tu humiliásti sicut vulnerátum, supérbum: * in bráchio virtútis tuæ dispersísti inimícos tuos.

    11. Thou hast humbled the proud one, as one that is slain: * with the arm of thy strength thou hast scattered thy enemies.

  11. Tui sunt cæli, et tua est terra: † orbem terræ et plenitúdinem ejus tu fundásti: * aquilónem, et mare tu creásti.

    12. Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth: the world and the fulness thereof thou hast founded: * the north and the sea thou hast created.

  12. Thabor et Hermon in nómine tuo exsultábunt: * tuum bráchium cum poténtia.

    13. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name: * thy arm is with might.

  13. Firmétur manus tua, et exaltétur déxtera tua: * justítia et judícium præparátio sedis tuæ.

    14. Let thy hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted: * justice and judgment are the preparation of thy throne.

  14. Misericórdia et véritas præcédent fáciem tuam: * beátus pópulus, qui scit jubilatiónem.

    15. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face: * blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation.

  15. Dómine, in lúmine vultus tui ambulábunt, † et in nómine tuo exsultábunt tota die: * et in justítia tua exaltabúntur.

    16. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance: and in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, * and in thy justice they shall be exalted.

  16. Quóniam glória virtútis eórum tu es: * et in beneplácito tuo exaltábitur cornu nostrum.

    17. For thou art the glory of their strength: * and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted.

  17. Quia Dómini est assúmptio nostra, * et Sancti Israël, regis nostri.

    18. For our protection is of the Lord, * and of our king the holy one of Israel.

Psalmus 88 (20,38)

Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: * I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people.

  1. Invéni David, servum meum: * óleo sancto meo unxi eum.

    2. I have found David my servant: * with my holy oil I have anointed him.

  2. Manus enim mea auxiliábitur ei: * et bráchium meum confortábit eum.

    3. For my hand shall help him: * and my arm shall strengthen him.

  3. Nihil profíciet inimícus in eo: * et fílius iniquitátis non appónet nocére ei.

    4. The enemy shall have no advantage over him: * nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him.

  4. Et concídam a fácie ipsíus inimícos ejus: * et odiéntes eum in fugam convértam.

    5. And I will cut down his enemies before his face; * and them that hate him I will put to flight.

  5. Et véritas mea, et misericórdia mea cum ipso: * et in nómine meo exaltábitur cornu ejus.

    6. And my truth and my mercy shall be with him: * and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

  6. Et ponam in mari manum ejus: * et in flumínibus déxteram ejus.

    7. And I will set his hand in the sea; * and his right hand in the rivers.

  7. Ipse invocábit me: Pater meus es tu: * Deus meus, et suscéptor salútis meæ.

    8. He shall cry out to me: Thou art my father: * my God, and the support of my salvation.

  8. Et ego primogénitum ponam illum: * excélsum præ régibus terræ.

    9. And I will make him my firstborn, * high above the kings of the earth.

  9. In ætérnum servábo illi misericórdiam meam: * et testaméntum meum fidéle ipsi.

    10. I will keep my mercy for him for ever: * and my covenant faithful to him.

  10. Et ponam in sǽculum sǽculi semen ejus: * et thronum ejus sicut dies cæli.

    11. And I will make his seed to endure for evermore: * and his throne as the days of heaven.

  11. Si autem derelíquerint fílii ejus legem meam: * et in judíciis meis non ambuláverint.

    12. And if his children forsake my law, * and walk not in my judgments:

    13. If they profane my justices: * and keep not my commandments:

  13. Visitábo in virga iniquitátes eórum: * et in verbéribus peccáta eórum.

    14. I will visit their iniquities with a rod: *and their sins with stripes.

  14. Misericórdiam autem meam non dispérgam ab eo: * neque nocébo in veritáte mea:

    15. But my mercy I will not take away from him: * nor will I suffer my truth to fail.

  15. Neque profanábo testaméntum meum: * et quæ procédunt de lábiis meis, non fáciam írrita.

    16. Neither will I profane my covenant: * and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void.

  16. Semel jurávi in sancto meo: Si David méntiar: * semen ejus in ætérnum manébit.

    17. Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David: * his seed shall endure for ever.

  17. Et thronus ejus sicut sol in conspéctu meo, † et sicut luna perfécta in ætérnum: * et testis in cælo fidélis.

    18. And his throne as the sun before me: * and as the moon perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in heaven.

But thou hast rejected and despised: * thou hast been angry with thy anointed.

  1. Evertísti testaméntum servi tui: * profanásti in terra Sanctuárium ejus.

    2. Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy servant: * thou hast profaned his sanctuary on the earth.

  2. Destruxísti omnes sepes ejus: * posuísti firmaméntum ejus formídinem.

    3. Thou hast broken down all his hedges: * thou hast made his strength fear.

  3. Diripuérunt eum omnes transeúntes viam: * factus est oppróbrium vicínis suis.

    4. All that pass by the way have robbed him: * he is become a reproach to his neighbours.

  4. Exaltásti déxteram depriméntium eum: * lætificásti omnes inimícos ejus.

    5. Thou hast set up the right hand of them that oppress him: * thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

  5. Avertísti adjutórium gládii ejus: * et non es auxiliátus ei in bello.

    6. Thou hast turned away the help of his sword; * and hast not assisted him in battle.

  6. Destruxísti eum ab emundatióne: * et sedem ejus in terram collisísti.

  7. Minorásti dies témporis ejus: * perfudísti eum confusióne.

    8. Thou hast shortened the days of his time: * thou hast covered him with confusion.

  8. Usquequo, Dómine, avértis in finem: * exardéscet sicut ignis ira tua?

    9. How long, O Lord, turnest thou away unto the end? * shall thy anger burn like fire?

  9. Memoráre quæ mea substántia: * numquid enim vane constituísti omnes fílios hóminum?

    10. Remember what my substance is: * for hast thou made all the children of men in vain?

  10. Quis est homo, qui vivet, et non vidébit mortem: * éruet ánimam suam de manu ínferi?

    11. Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: * that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell?

  11. Ubi sunt misericórdiæ tuæ antíquæ, Dómine: * sicut jurásti David in veritáte tua?

    12. Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, * according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth?

  12. Memor esto, Dómine, oppróbrii servórum tuórum: * quod contínui in sinu meo multárum Géntium.

    13. Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of thy servants * which I have held in my bosom of many nations:

  13. Quod exprobravérunt inimíci tui, Dómine, * quod exprobravérunt commutatiónem Christi tui.

    14. Wherewith thy enemies have reproached, O Lord; * wherewith they have reproached the change of thy anointed.

  14. Benedíctus Dóminus in ætérnum: * fiat, fiat.

    15. Blessed be the Lord for evermore. * So be it. So be it.

Isa 60:6

Omnes de Saba vénient, † aurum et thus deferéntes, * et laudem Dómino annuntiántes.

All they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and shewing forth praise to the Lord.

Orémus.

Deus, qui hodiérna die Unigénitum tuum géntibus stella duce revelásti: † concéde propítius; ut qui iam te ex fide cognóvimus, * usque ad contemplándam spéciem tuæ celsitúdinis perducámur.
Per eúndem Dóminum nostrum Iesum Christum Fílium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus, * per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum.

O God, Who by the leading of a star didst, as on this day, manifest thine Only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, which know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead:
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
