Saintly and prudent, modest in behaviour, Peaceful and sober, chaste was he, and lowly. While that life’s vigour, coursing through his members, Quickened his being. 3. Sick ones of old time, to his tomb resorting, Sorely by ailments manifold afflicted, Oft-times have welcomed health and strength returning, At his petition. 4. Whence we in chorus gladly do him honour, Chanting his praises with devout affection, That in his merits we may have a portion, Now and forever. 5. His be the glory, power and salvation, Who over all things reigneth in the highest, Earth’s mighty fabric ruling and directing, Onely and Trinal. Amen.

Who shall declare the powers of the Lord? * who shall set forth all his praises?

That we may see the good of thy chosen, that we may rejoice in the joy of thy nation: * that thou mayst be praised with thy inheritance.
We have sinned with our fathers: * we have acted unjustly, we have wrought iniquity.
Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt: * they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies:
And they provoked to wrath going up to the sea, * even the Red Sea.
And he saved them for his own name’s sake: * that he might make his power known.

They forgot God, who saved them, * who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Cham: terrible things in the Red Sea.

And he was mindful of his covenant: * and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
And he gave them unto mercies, * in the sight of all those that had made them captives.
Save us, O Lord, our God: * and gather us from among nations:

And he led them into the right way: * that they might go to a city of habitation.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: * and his wonderful works to the children of men.
For he hath satisfied the empty soul, * and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.
Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: * bound in want and in iron.
Because they had exasperated the words of God: * and provoked the counsel of the most High:
And their heart was humbled with labours: * they were weakened, and there was none to help them.

These have seen * the works of the Lord, and his wonders.

The just see and rejoice * and understand the mercy of the Lord.

When Anthony of Egypt entered a church and heard the words of the Gospel, “If you will be perfect, go, sell all that you have and give to the poor,” he took them as if said to him personally, thinking that this is how Christ should be obeyed. And so, having sold his family possessions and distributed the money to the poor, he withdrew to the vast solitudes of Egypt. He was so fired with zeal for all virtues that, whenever he saw anyone praiseworthy for excelling in any virtue, he strove to imitate him. None was more disciplined than he, none more watchful. He was so great a terror to the demons that many persons throughout Egypt who were troubled by them were set free merely by invoking Anthony's name. And so, famous for his holiness and his miracles, when he had drawn innumerable other men and women to follow his example, he departed this life in the hundred and fifth Year of his age, on January 17.
