Lectio brevis

Brothers: Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith.

Psalmus 87

May my request come before thee, O Lord.

Lord, the God of my salvation: * I have cried in the day, and in the night before thee.

2. Intret in conspéctu tuo orátio mea: * inclína aurem tuam ad precem meam:

Let my prayer come in before thee: * incline thy ear to my petition.

3. Quia repléta est malis ánima mea: * et vita mea inférno appropinquávit.

For my soul is filled with evils: * and my life hath drawn nigh to hell.

4. Æstimátus sum cum descendéntibus in lacum: * factus sum sicut homo sine adjutório, inter mórtuos liber.

I am counted among them that go down to the pit: * I am become as a man without help, free among the dead.

5. Sicut vulneráti dormiéntes in sepúlcris, † quorum non es memor ámplius: * et ipsi de manu tua repúlsi sunt.

Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom thou rememberest no more: * and they are cast off from thy hand.

6. Posuérunt me in lacu inferióri: * in tenebrósis, et in umbra mortis.

They have laid me in the lower pit: * in the dark places, and in the shadow of death.

7. Super me confirmátus est furor tuus: * et omnes fluctus tuos induxísti super me.

Thy wrath is strong over me: * and all thy waves thou hast brought in upon me.

8. Longe fecísti notos meos a me: * posuérunt me abominatiónem sibi.

Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me: * they have set me an abomination to themselves.

9. Tráditus sum, et non egrediébar: * óculi mei languérunt præ inópia.

I was delivered up, and came not forth: * my eyes languished through poverty.

10. Clamávi ad te, Dómine, tota die: * expándi ad te manus meas.

All the day I cried to thee, O Lord: * I stretched out my hands to thee.

11. Numquid mórtuis fácies mirabília: * aut médici suscitábunt, et confitebúntur tibi?

Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? * or shall physicians raise to life, and give praise to thee?

12. Numquid narrábit áliquis in sepúlcro misericórdiam tuam, * et veritátem tuam in perditióne?

Shall any one in the sepulchre declare thy mercy: * and thy truth in destruction?

13. Numquid cognoscéntur in ténebris mirabília tua, * et justítia tua in terra obliviónis?

Shall thy wonders be known in the dark; * and thy justice in the land of forgetfulness?

14. Et ego ad te, Dómine, clamávi: * et mane orátio mea prævéniet te.

But I, O Lord, have cried to thee: * and in the morning my prayer shall prevent thee.

15. Ut quid, Dómine, repéllis oratiónem meam: * avértis fáciem tuam a me?

Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: * why turnest thou away thy face from me?

16. Pauper sum ego, et in labóribus a juventúte mea: * exaltátus autem, humiliátus sum et conturbátus.

I am poor, and in labours from my youth: * and being exalted have been humbled and troubled.

17. In me transiérunt iræ tuæ: * et terróres tui conturbavérunt me.

Thy wrath hath come upon me: * and thy terrors have troubled me.

18. Circumdedérunt me sicut aqua tota die: * circumdedérunt me simul.

They have come round about me like water all the day: * they have compassed me about together.

19. Elongásti a me amícum et próximum: * et notos meos a miséria.

Friend and neighbour thou hast put far from me: * and my acquaintance, because of misery.

20. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

21. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 102 (1,12)

Bless the Lord, O my soul: * and let all that is within me bless his holy name.

2. Bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino: * et noli oblivísci omnes retributiónes ejus.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, * and never forget all he hath done for thee.

3. Qui propitiátur ómnibus iniquitátibus tuis: * qui sanat omnes infirmitátes tuas.

Who forgiveth all thy iniquities: * who healeth all thy diseases.

4. Qui rédimit de intéritu vitam tuam: * qui corónat te in misericórdia et miseratiónibus.

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction: * who crowneth thee with mercy and compassion.

5. Qui replet in bonis desidérium tuum: * renovábitur ut áquilæ juvéntus tua.

Who satisfieth thy desire with good things: * thy youth shall be renewed like the eagle’s.

6. Fáciens misericórdias Dóminus: * et judícium ómnibus injúriam patiéntibus.

The Lord doth mercies, * and judgment for all that suffer wrong.

7. Notas fecit vias suas Móysi, * fíliis Israël voluntátes suas.

He hath made his ways known to Moses: * his wills to the children of Israel.

8. Miserátor, et miséricors Dóminus: * longánimis et multum miséricors.

The Lord is compassionate and merciful: * longsuffering and plenteous in mercy.

9. Non in perpétuum irascétur: * neque in ætérnum comminábitur.

He will not always be angry: * nor will he threaten for ever.

10. Non secúndum peccáta nostra fecit nobis: * neque secúndum iniquitátes nostras retríbuit nobis.

He hath not dealt with us according to our sins: * nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11. Quóniam secúndum altitúdinem cæli a terra: * corroborávit misericórdiam suam super timéntes se.

For according to the height of the heaven above the earth: * he hath strengthened his mercy towards them that fear him.

12. Quantum distat ortus ab occidénte: * longe fecit a nobis iniquitátes nostras.

As far as the east is from the west, * so far hath he removed our iniquities from us.

13. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

Psalmus 102 (13,22)

As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him: * for he knoweth our frame.

2. Recordátus est quóniam pulvis sumus: † homo, sicut fœnum dies ejus, * tamquam flos agri sic efflorébit.

He remembereth that we are dust: * man’s days are as grass, as the flower of the field so shall he flourish.

3. Quóniam spíritus pertransíbit in illo, et non subsístet: * et non cognóscet ámplius locum suum.

For the spirit shall pass in him, and he shall not be: * and he shall know his place no more.

4. Misericórdia autem Dómini ab ætérno, * et usque in ætérnum super timéntes eum.

But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity * and unto eternity upon them that fear him:

5. Et justítia illíus in fílios filiórum, * his qui servant testaméntum ejus.

And his justice unto children’s children, * to such as keep his covenant,

6. Et mémores sunt mandatórum ipsíus, * ad faciéndum ea.

And are mindful of his commandments * to do them.

7. Dóminus in cælo parávit sedem suam: * et regnum ipsíus ómnibus dominábitur.

The Lord hath prepared his throne in heaven: * and his kingdom shall rule over all.

8. Benedícite Dómino, omnes Angeli ejus: † poténtes virtúte, faciéntes verbum illíus, * ad audiéndam vocem sermónum ejus.

Bless the Lord, all ye his angels: * you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders.

9. Benedícite Dómino, omnes virtútes ejus: * minístri ejus, qui fácitis voluntátem ejus.

Bless the Lord, all ye his hosts: * you ministers of his that do his will.

10. Benedícite Dómino, ómnia ópera ejus: † in omni loco dominatiónis ejus, * bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino.

Bless the Lord, all his works: * in every place of his dominion, O my soul, bless thou the Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

Protect us, * Lord, while we are awake and safeguard us while we sleep; that we may keep watch with Christ, and rest in peace.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, + * according to thy word in peace;

2. Quia vidérunt óculi mei * salutáre tuum,

Because my eyes have seen * thy salvation,

3. Quod parásti * ante fáciem ómnium populórum,

Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all peoples:

4. Lumen ad revelatiónem Géntium, * et glóriam plebis tuæ Israël.

A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, * and the glory of thy people Israel.

5. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
