The law and seers that were of old In diverse ways this Lent foretold, Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide, In after ages sanctified. 3. More sparing therefore let us make The words we speak, the food we take, Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred Be every sense in holy guard. 4. Avoid the evil thoughts that roll Like waters o’er the heedless soul; Nor let the foe occasion find Our souls in slavery to bind. 5. In prayer together let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before the Judge’s feet, And his avenging wrath entreat. 6. Thy grace have we offended sore, By sins, O God, which we deplore; But pour upon us from on high, O pardoning One, thy clemency. 7. The memory of thy testament * will live forever, O Lord our God.
Give glory to the Lord, and call upon his name: * declare his deeds among the Gentiles.

He spread a cloud for their protection, * and fire to give them light in the night.

Who shall declare the powers of the Lord? * who shall set forth all his praises?
Blessed are they that keep judgment, * and do justice at all times.
Remember us, O Lord, in the favour of thy people: * visit us with thy salvation.
That we may see the good of thy chosen, that we may rejoice in the joy of thy nation: * that thou mayst be praised with thy inheritance.
We have sinned with our fathers: * we have acted unjustly, we have wrought iniquity.
Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt: * they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies:
And they provoked to wrath going up to the sea, * even the Red Sea.
And he saved them for his own name’s sake: * that he might make his power known.
And he rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up: * and he led them through the depths, as in a wilderness.

But they provoked him with their counsel: * and they were brought low by their iniquities.

And he was mindful of his covenant: * and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
And he gave them unto mercies, * in the sight of all those that had made them captives.
Save us, O Lord, our God: * and gather us from among nations:

They were hungry and thirsty: * their soul fainted in them.
And they cried to the Lord in their tribulation: * and he delivered them out of their distresses.
And he led them into the right way: * that they might go to a city of habitation.
Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: * and his wonderful works to the children of men.
For he hath satisfied the empty soul, * and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.
Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: * bound in want and in iron.
Because they had exasperated the words of God: * and provoked the counsel of the most High:
And their heart was humbled with labours: * they were weakened, and there was none to help them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction: * and he delivered them out of their distresses.
And he brought them out of darkness, * and the shadow of death; and broke their bonds in sunder.

These have seen * the works of the Lord, and his wonders.

They that go down to the sea in ships, * doing business in the great waters:

They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: * their soul pined away with evils.

The just see and rejoice * and understand the mercy of the Lord.

Iesus perréxit in montem Olivéti, in montem fructuósum, in montem unguénti, in montem chrísmatis. Ubi enim decébat docére Christum, nisi in monte Olivéti? Christi enim nomen a chrísmate dictum est: chrisma autem Græce, Latíne únctio nominátur. Ideo autem nos unxit, quia luctatóres contra diábolum fecit. Et dilúculo íterum venit in templum, et omnis pópulus venit ad eum: et sedens docébat eos, et non tenebátur, quia nondum pati dignabátur. Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives, even unto that fruitful Mount, that anointing Mount, that Mount of Chrism. Where else became it Christ to teach, if not on the Mount of Olives? For the word Christ is derived from Chrisma, and Chrisma is the Greek for ointment. He hath anointed us that we may be able to wrestle with the devil. And, early in the morning, He came again into the temple; and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them and no man laid hands on Him, because He was not yet pleased to suffer. And now listen how His enemies tried the Lord's meekness.

And the Scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto Him: Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now, Moses in the law commanded that such should be stoned; but what sayest Thou? This they said, tempting Him, that they might have to accuse Him. Whereof to accuse Him? Had they taken Him in any sin? Or was the woman said to have anything to do with Him?

We must understand, my brethren, that there was a wonderful gentleness in the Lord. They knew that He was most mild and most gentle. Of Him indeed it had been said of old time: Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most Mighty! In thy comeliness and thy beauty go forward, fare prosperously, and reign, because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness. (Ps. xli4, 5.) And He came bringing truth as one that teacheth, meekness as one that delivereth, and righteousness as one that knoweth. Because of these it was that the Prophet declared, in the Holy Ghost, that He was to reign. Whenever He spake, truth shone forth whenever He spared His enemies, meekness was made glorious. And His enemies, racked with envy and hatred by His truth and His meekness, laid a stumbling-block for His righteousness.
