Incipit

Invitatorium

When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.

Hymnus

1. Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle Sing the last, the dread affray; O'er the cross, the victor's trophy, Sound the high triumphal lay: Tell how Christ, the world's Redeemer, As a victim won the day. 2. God, his Maker, sorely grieving That the first-made Adam fell, When he ate the fruit of sorrow, Whose reward was death and hell, Noted then this wood, the ruin Of the ancient wood to quell. 3. For the work of our salvation Needs would have his order so, And the multiform deceiver's Art by art would overthrow, And from thence would bring the med'cine Whence the insult of the foe. 4. Wherefore, when the sacred fullness Of the appointed time was come, This world's Maker left his Father, Sent the heav'nly mansion from, And proceeded, God Incarnate, Of the Virgin's holy womb. 5. Weeps the infant in the manger That in Bethlehem's stable stands; And his limbs the Virgin Mother Doth compose in swaddling bands, Meetly thus in linen folding Of her God the feet and hands. 6. To the Trinity be glory Everlasting, as is meet; Equal to the Father, equal To the Son, and Paraclete: Trinal Unity, whose praises All created things repeat. Amen.

Nocturnus I

Psalmus 77 (1,8)

The Lord set up a testimony in Jacob: * and made a law in Israel.

Attend, O my people, to my law: * incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

  1. Apériam in parábolis os meum: * loquar propositiónes ab inítio.
  2. I will open my mouth in parables: * I will utter propositions from the beginning.

  3. Quanta audívimus et cognóvimus ea: * et patres nostri narrarunt nobis.
  4. How great things have we heard and known, * and our fathers have told us.

  5. Non sunt occultáta a fíliis eórum: * in generatióne áltera.
  6. They have not been hidden from their children, * in another generation.

  7. Narrántes laudes Dómini, et virtes ejus: * et mirabília ejus, quæ fecit.
  8. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, * and his wonders which he hath done.

  9. Et suscitávit testimónium in Jacob: * et legem pósuit in Israël.
  10. And he set up a testimony in Jacob: * and made a law in Israel.

  11. Quanta mandávit pátribus nostris nota fácere ea liis suis: * ut cognóscat genetio áltera.
  12. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children: * that another generation might know them.

  14. The children that should be born and should rise up, * and declare them to their children.

  16. That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: * and may seek his commandments.

  18. That they may not become like their fathers, * a perverse and exasperating generation.

  20. A generation that set not their heart aright: * and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

  21. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spitui Sancto.
  22. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  23. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæcurum. Amen.
  24. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord set up a testimony in Jacob: * and made a law in Israel.

Psalmus 77 (9,16)

The Lord did wonderful things * in the sight of their fathers.

The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: * they have turned back in the day of battle.

  2. They kept not the covenant of God: * and in his law they would not walk.

  4. And they forgot his benefits, * and his wonders that he had shewn them.

  5. Coram pátribus eórum fecit mirabília in terra Ægýpti: * in campo neos.
  6. Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, * in the field of Tanis.

  7. Interrúpit mare, et perdúxit eos: * et státuit aquas quasi in utre.
  8. He divided the sea and brought them through: * and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.

  9. Et dedúxit eos in nube diéi: * et tota nocte in illuminatióne ignis.
  10. And he conducted them with a cloud by day: * and all the night with a light of fire.

  11. Interrúpit petram in emo: * et adaquávit eos velut in abýsso multa.
  12. He struck the rock in the wilderness: * and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.

  14. He brought forth water out of the rock: * and made streams run down as rivers.

  15. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spitui Sancto.
  16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæcurum. Amen.
  18. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord did wonderful things * in the sight of their fathers.

Psalmus 77 (17,31)

The Lord opened * the doors of heaven and had rained down manna upon them to eat.

And they added yet more sin against him: * they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.

  2. And they tempted God in their hearts, * by asking meat for their desires.

  4. And they spoke ill of God: * they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

  5. Quóniam percússit petram, et fluxérunt aquæ: * et torréntes inundarunt.
  6. Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, * and the streams overflowed.

  8. Can he also give bread, * or provide a table for his people?

  9. Ideo audívit Dóminus, et dístulit: * et ignis accénsus est in Jacob, et ira ascéndit in Israël.
  10. Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: * and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.

  12. Because they believed not in God: * and trusted not in his salvation.

  13. Et mandávit núbibus super: * et jánuas cæli aruit.
  14. And he had commanded the clouds from above, * and had opened the doors of heaven.

  16. And had rained down manna upon them to eat, * and had given them the bread of heaven.

  17. Panem Angelórum manducávit homo, * cibária misit eis in abundántia.
  18. Man ate the bread of angels: * he sent them provisions in abundance.

  19. Tránstulit Austrum de lo: * et indúxit in virtúte sua Africum.
  20. He removed the south wind from heaven: * and by his power brought in the southwest wind.

  21. Et pluit super eos sicut púlverem carnes: * et sicut arénam maris volatília penta.
  22. And he rained upon them flesh as dust: * and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.

  23. Et cecidérunt in médio castrórum eórum: * circa tabernácula eórum.
  24. And they fell in the midst of their camp, * round about their pavilions.

  26. So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire: * they were not defrauded of that which they craved.

  27. Adhuc escæ eórum erant in ore iprum: * et ira Dei ascéndit super eos
  28. As yet their meat was in their mouth: * and the wrath of God came upon them.

  29. Et occídit pingues eórum, * et eléctos Israël impevit.
  30. And he slew the fat ones amongst them, * and brought down the chosen men of Israel.

  31. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  32. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  33. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  34. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord opened * the doors of heaven and had rained down manna upon them to eat.

Psalmus 77 (32,41)

God is their helper, * and the most high God their redeemer.

In all these things they sinned still: * and they believed not for his wondrous works.

  2. And their days were consumed in vanity, * and their years in haste.

  4. When he slew them, then they sought him: * and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.

  6. And they remembered that God was their helper: * and the most high God their redeemer.

  8. And they loved him with their mouth: * and with their tongue they lied unto him:

  10. But their heart was not right with him: * nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.

  12. But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: * and will not destroy them.

  14. And many a time did he turn away his anger: * and did not kindle all his wrath.

  16. And he remembered that they are flesh: * a wind that goeth and returneth not.

  17. Quóties exacerbavérunt eum in desérto, * in iram concitavérunt eum in inaquóso?
  18. How often did they provoke him in the desert: * and move him to wrath in the place without water?

  20. And they turned back and tempted God: * and grieved the holy one of Israel.

  21. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  22. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  23. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  24. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

God is their helper, * and the most high God their redeemer.

Psalmus 77 (42,58)

The Lord redeemed them * from the hand of him that afflicted them.

They remembered not his hand, * in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:

  1. Sicut pósuit in Ægýpto signa sua, * et prodígia sua in campo neos.
  2. How he wrought his signs in Egypt, * and his wonders in the field of Tanis.

  4. And he turned their rivers into blood, * and their showers that they might, not drink.

  5. Misit in eos cœnomyíam, et comédit eos: * et ranam, et dispérdidit eos.
  6. He sent amongst them diverse sorts of flies, which devoured them: * and frogs which destroyed them.

  7. Et dedit ærúgini fructus eórum: * et labóres eórum locústæ.
  8. And he gave up their fruits to the blast, * and their labours to the locust.

  9. Et occídit in grándine víneas eórum: * et moros eórum in pruína.
  10. And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, * and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.

  11. Et trádidit grándini juménta eórum: * et possessiónem eórum igni.
  12. And he gave up their cattle to the hail, * and their stock to the fire.

  14. And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: * indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.

  15. Viam fecit sémitæ iræ suæ, non pepércit a morte anibus eórum: * et juménta eórum in morte conclúsit.
  16. He made a way for a path to his anger: * he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.

  17. Et percússit omne primogénitum in terra Ægýpti: * primítias omnis labóris eórum in tabernáculis Cham.
  18. And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: * the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.

  19. Et ábstulit sicut oves pulum suum: * et perdúxit eos tamquam gregem in desérto.
  20. And he took away his own people as sheep: * and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

  22. And he brought them out in hope, and they feared not: * and the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

  23. Et indúxit eos in montem sanctificatiónis suæ: * montem, quem acquisívit déxtera ejus.
  24. And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: * the mountain which his right hand had purchased.

  25. Et ejécit a fácie eórum Gentes: * et sorte divísit eis terram in funículo distributiónis.
  26. And he cast out the Gentiles before them: * and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.

  27. Et habitáre fecit in tabernáculis eórum: * tribus Israël.
  28. And he made the tribes of Israel * to dwell in their tabernacles.

  30. Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: * and they kept not his testimonies.

  32. And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: * even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.

  33. In iram concitavérunt eum in cóllibus suis: * et in sculptílibus suis ad æmulatiónem eum provocarunt.
  34. They provoked him to anger on their hills: * and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.

  35. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  36. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  37. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  38. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord redeemed them * from the hand of him that afflicted them.

Psalmus 77 (59,72)

God built * his sanctuary in the earth.

God heard, and despised them, * and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.

  1. Et répulit tabernáculum Silo: * tabernáculum suum, ubi habitávit in honibus.
  2. And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, * his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.

  3. Et trádidit in captivitátem virtútem eórum: * et pulchritúdinem eórum in manus inici.
  4. And he delivered their strength into captivity: * and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.

  5. Et conclúsit in gládio pópulum suum: * et hereditátem suam sprevit.
  6. And he shut up his people under the sword: * and he despised his inheritance.

  8. Fire consumed their young men: * and their maidens were not lamented.

  10. Their priests fell by the sword: * and their widows did not mourn.

  12. And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, * and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.

  13. Et percússit inimícos suos in posterióra: * oppróbrium sempitérnum dedit illis.
  14. And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: * he put them to an everlasting reproach.

  16. And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: * and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

  17. Sed elégit tribum Juda, * montem Sion quem dixit.
  18. But he chose the tribe of Juda, * mount Sion which he loved.

  20. And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land * which he founded for ever.

  22. And he chose his servant David, and took him from the flocks of sheep: * he brought him from following the ewes great with young,

  23. Páscere Jacob, servum suum, * et Israël, hereditátem suam:
  24. To feed Jacob his servant, * and Israel his inheritance.

  25. Et pavit eos in innocéntia cordis sui: * et in intelléctibus mánuum suárum dedúxit eos.
  26. And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: * and conducted them by the skilfulness of his hands.

  27. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  28. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  29. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  30. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

God built * his sanctuary in the earth.

Psalmus 78

Help us, O God, our Saviour, * deliver us: and forgive us our sins.

O God, the heathens are come into thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: * they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.

  1. Posuérunt morticína servórum tuórum, escas volatílibus li: * carnes sanctórum tuórum béstiis terræ.
  2. They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: * the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.

  4. They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem, * and there was none to bury them.

  6. We are become a reproach to our neighbours: * a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.

  7. Usquequo, Dómine, irascéris in finem: * accendétur velut ignis zelus tuus?
  8. How long, O Lord, wilt thou be angry for ever: * shall thy zeal be kindled like a fire?

  10. Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that have not known thee: * and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.

  11. Quia comedérunt Jacob: * et locum ejus desolarunt.
  12. Because they have devoured Jacob; * and have laid waste his place.

  13. Ne memíneris iniquitátum nostrárum antiquárum, cito antícipent nos misericórdiæ tuæ: * quia páuperes facti sumus nimis.
  14. Remember not our former iniquities: let thy mercies speedily prevent us, * for we are become exceeding poor.

  15. Adjuva nos, Deus, salutáris noster: et propter glóriam nóminis tui, Dómine, líbera nos: * et propítius esto peccátis nostris, propter nomen tuum:
  16. Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: * and forgive us our sins for thy name’s sake:

  17. Ne forte dicant in Géntibus: Ubi est Deus eórum? * et innotéscat in natiónibus coram óculis nostris.
  18. Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? * And let him be made known among the nations before our eyes,

  19. Ultio sánguinis servórum tuórum, qui efsus est: * intróeat in conspéctu tuo gémitus compedirum.
  20. By the revenging the blood of thy servants, which hath been shed: * let the sighing of the prisoners come in before thee.

  21. Secúndum magnitúdinem bráchii tui, * pósside fílios mortificarum.
  22. According to the greatness of thy arm, * take possession of the children of them that have been put to death.

  23. Et redde vicínis nostris séptuplum in sinu eórum: * impropérium ipsórum, quod exprobravérunt tibi, mine.
  24. And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: * the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.

  26. But we thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, * will give thanks to thee for ever.

  27. In generatiónem et generatiónem * annuntiábimus laudem tuam.
  28. We will shew forth thy praise, * unto generation and generation.

  29. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  30. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  31. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  32. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Help us, O God, our Saviour, * deliver us: and forgive us our sins.

Psalmus 80

I am the Lord * God of Israel, who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Rejoice, O God, our helper: * sing aloud to the God of Jacob.

  2. Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel: * the pleasant psaltery with the harp.

  3. Buccináte in Neoménia tuba, * in insígni die solemnitátis vestræ.
  4. Blow up the trumpet on the new moon, * on the noted day of your solemnity.

  5. Quia præcéptum in Israël est: * et judícium Deo Jacob.
  6. For it is a commandment in Israel, * and a judgment to the God of Jacob.

  8. He ordained it for a testimony in Joseph, when he came out of the land of Egypt: * he heard a tongue which he knew not.

  9. Divértit ab onéribus dorsum ejus: * manus ejus in cóphino serviérunt.
  10. He removed his back from the burdens: * his hands had served in baskets.

  11. In tribulatióne invocásti me, et liberávi te: exaudívi te in abscóndito tempestis: * probávi te apud aquam contradictiónis.
  12. Thou calledst upon me in affliction, and I delivered thee: * I heard thee in the secret place of tempest: I proved thee at the waters of contradiction.

  14. Hear, O my people, and I will testify to thee: * O Israel, if thou wilt hearken to me; there shall be no new god in thee: neither shalt thou adore a strange god.

  16. For I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt: * open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

  18. But my people heard not my voice: * and Israel hearkened not to me.

  19. Et dimísi eos secúndum desidéria cordis eórum: * ibunt in adinventiónibus suis.
  20. So I let them go according to the desires of their heart: * they shall walk in their own inventions.

  21. Si pópulus meus audísset me: * Israël si in viis meis ambulásset:
  22. If my people had heard me: * if Israel had walked in my ways:

  24. I should soon have humbled their enemies, * and laid my hand on them that troubled them.

  25. Inimíci Dómini mentíti sunt ei: * et erit tempus eórum in cula.
  26. The enemies of the Lord have lied to him: * and their time shall be for ever.

  28. And he fed them with the fat of wheat, * and filled them with honey out of the rock.

Amen.

I am the Lord * God of Israel, who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Psalmus 82

Be not thou silent, O Lord, * for Thy enemies lifted up their head.

O God, who shall be like to thee? * Hold not thy peace, neither be O God, thou still,

  2. For lo, thy enemies have made a noise: * and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

  3. Super pópulum tuum malignarunt conlium: * et cogitavérunt advérsus sanctos tuos.
  4. They have taken a malicious counsel against thy people, * and have consulted against thy saints.

  6. They have said: Come and let us destroy them, * so that they be not a nation: and let the name of Israel be remembered no more.

  7. Quóniam cogitavérunt unamiter: * simul advérsum te testaméntum disposuérunt, tabernácula Idumæórum et Ismahetæ:
  8. For they have contrived with one consent: * they have made a covenant together against thee; the tabernacles of the Edomites, and the Ismahelites:

  10. Moab, and the Agarens, Gebal, and Ammon and Amalec: * the Philistines, with the inhabitants of Tyre.

  12. Yea, and the Assyrian also is joined with them: * they are come to the aid of the sons of Lot.

  13. Fac illis sicut Mádian, et saræ: * sicut Jabin in torrénte Cisson.
  14. Do to them as thou didst to Madian and to Sisara: * as to Jabin at the brook of Cisson.

  16. Who perished at Endor: * and became as dung for the earth.

  17. Pone príncipes eórum sicut Oreb, et Zeb, * et Zébee, et Sálmana:
  18. Make their princes like Oreb, and Zeb, * and Zebee, and Salmana.

  19. Omnes príncipes eórum: * qui dixérunt: Hereditáte possideámus Sanctuárium Dei.
  20. All their princes, * who have said: Let us possess the sanctuary of God for an inheritance.

  22. O my God, make them like a wheel; * and as stubble before the wind.

  24. As fire which burneth the wood: * and as a flame burning mountains:

  26. So shalt thou pursue them with thy tempest: * and shalt trouble them in thy wrath.

  27. Imple fácies eórum ignonia: * et quærent nomen tuum, mine.
  28. Fill their faces with shame; * and they shall seek thy name, O Lord.

  29. Erubéscant, et conturbéntur in culum culi: * et confundántur, et péreant.
  30. Let them be ashamed and troubled for ever and ever: * and let them be confounded and perish.

  31. Et cognóscant quia nomen tibi minus: * tu solus Altíssimus in omni terra.
  32. And let them know that the Lord is thy name: * thou alone art the most High over all the earth.

  33. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  34. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  35. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  36. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Be not thou silent, O Lord, * for Thy enemies lifted up their head.

Versus

Pater

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.

Absolutio.
℟. Amen.
Benedictio:

Evangélica léctio sit nobis salus et protéctio.

Lectio 1
Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
Ioannes 11:47-54

In illo témpore: Collegérunt pontífices et pharisǽi concílium advérsus Iesum, et dicébant: Quid fácimus, quia hic homo multa signa facit? Et réliqua.

At that time, chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. And so on.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi
Tract. 49 in Ioannem, sub finem

The chief Priests and the Pharisees took counsel together, but Let us believe in Him was not one of the suggestions offered. Those lost creatures thought much more how they might hurt and undo Him, than how they might save themselves from perishing. And yet they were afraid, and took counsel together, and said What do we? For this Man doeth many miracles. If we let Him thus alone, all men will believe on Him; and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and our nation. They were afraid of losing temporal things, but they gave no thought to eternal life, and so they lost both.

Benedictio:

Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Lectio 2

For, after that the Lord had suffered and been glorified, first came the Romans, and took away both their place and nation, prevailing against them and leading them away captive, and secondly there followeth them that which is written But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness. (Matth. viii. 12.) But their fear was that, if all men should believe on Christ, none would remain to defend the city of God and His Temple against the Romans, since they deemed that Christ's teaching was against the Temple itself, and against the laws of their fathers.

Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3

And one of them, named Ca'iphas, being the High Priest that same year, said unto them: Ye know nothing at all, nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself but being High Priest that year, he prophesied. Here we will learn that bad men are enabled by the spirit of prophecy to foretell the future; which, at the same time, the Evangelist attributeth to an ordinance of God, namely, that he was the High Priest.

Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.

Oratio

We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts, that all we who of our own will do check our sins with the curb of mortification, may suffer here, and escape condemnation to eternal punishment hereafter.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
