Ad Vesperas

Incipit

Psalmus 122

Thou who dwellest in heaven, * have mercy on us.

To thee have I lifted up my eyes, * who dwellest in heaven.

  1. Ecce sicut óculi serrum, * in mánibus dominórum suórum.
  2. Behold as the eyes of servants * are on the hands of their masters,

  3. Sicut óculi ancíllæ in mánibus dóminæ suæ: * ita óculi nostri ad Dóminum, Deum nostrum, donec misereátur nostri.
  4. As the eyes of the handmaid are on the hands of her mistress: * so are our eyes unto the Lord our God, until he have mercy on us.

  5. Miserére nostri, Dómine, miserére nostri: * quia multum repléti sumus despectióne:
  6. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us: * for we are greatly filled with contempt.

  8. For our soul is greatly filled: * we are a reproach to the rich, and contempt to the proud.

  9. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  10. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  11. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  12. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Thou who dwellest in heaven, * have mercy on us.

Psalmus 123

Our help is * in the name of the Lord.

If it had not been that the Lord was with us, let Israel now say: * If it had not been that the Lord was with us,

  1. Cum exsúrgerent mines in nos, * forte vivos deglutíssent nos:
  2. When men rose up against us, * perhaps they had swallowed us up alive.

  3. Cum irascerétur furor eórum in nos, * fórsitan aqua absorbuísset nos.
  4. When their fury was enkindled against us, * perhaps the waters had swallowed us up.

  5. Torréntem pertransívit ánima nostra: * fórsitan pertransísset ánima nostra aquam intolebilem.
  6. Our soul hath passed through a torrent: * perhaps our soul had passed through a water insupportable.

  8. Blessed be the Lord, * who hath not given us to be a prey to their teeth.

  10. Our soul hath been delivered as a sparrow * out of the snare of the fowlers.

  11. Láqueus contrítus est, * et nos liberáti sumus.
  12. The snare is broken, * and we are delivered.

  13. Adjutórium nostrum in mine mini, * qui fecit cælum et terram.
  14. Our help is in the name of the Lord, * who made heaven and earth.

  15. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  18. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our help is * in the name of the Lord.

Psalmus 124

The Lord standeth round his people * from this time forth and for evermore.

They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Sion: * he shall not be moved for ever that dwelleth in Jerusalem.

  2. Mountains are round about it: * so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth now and for ever.

  4. For the Lord will not leave the rod of sinners upon the lot of the just: * that the just may not stretch forth their hands to iniquity.

  5. Bénefac, mine, bonis, * et rectis corde.
  6. Do good, O Lord, to those that are good, * and to the upright of heart.

  8. But such as turn aside into bonds, the Lord shall lead out with the workers of iniquity: * peace upon Israel.

Amen.

The Lord standeth round his people * from this time forth and for evermore.

Psalmus 125

The Lord hath * done great things for us, whereof we rejoice.

When the Lord brought back the captivity of Sion, * we became like men comforted.

  2. Then was our mouth filled with gladness; * and our tongue with joy.

  4. Then shall they say among the Gentiles: * The Lord hath done great things for them.

  5. Magnificávit Dóminus fácere nobíscum: * facti sumus lætántes.
  6. The Lord hath done great things for us: * we are become joyful.

  7. Convérte, Dómine, captivitem nostram, * sicut torrens in austro.
  8. Turn again our captivity, O Lord, * as a stream in the south.

  9. Qui séminant in crimis, * in exsultatióne metent.
  10. They that sow in tears * shall reap in joy.

  11. Eúntes ibant et flebant, * mitténtes mina sua.
  12. Going they went and wept, * casting their seeds.

  14. But coming they shall come with joyfulness, * carrying their sheaves.

  15. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spitui Sancto.
  16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæcurum. Amen.
  18. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord hath * done great things for us, whereof we rejoice.

Psalmus 126

The Lord builds * the house and keeps the city.

Unless the Lord build the house, * they labour in vain that build it.

  1. Nisi Dóminus custodíerit civitem, * frustra vígilat qui cusdit eam.
  2. Unless the Lord keep the city, * he watcheth in vain that keepeth it.

  4. It is vain for you to rise before light, * rise ye after you have sitten, you that eat the bread of sorrow.

  5. Cum déderit diléctis suis somnum: * ecce heréditas Dómini fílii: merces, fructus ventris.
  6. When he shall give sleep to his beloved, * behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb.

  7. Sicut sagíttæ in manu poténtis: * ita fílii excusrum.
  8. As arrows in the hand of the mighty, * so the children of them that have been shaken.

  10. Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them; * he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate.

  11. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spitui Sancto.
  12. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  13. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæcurum. Amen.
  14. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lord builds * the house and keeps the city.

Capitulum Responsorium Versus

Ier 11:20

But thou, O Lord of Sabaoth, who judgest justly, and triest the reins and hearts, let me see thy revenge on them: for to thee I have revealed my cause, O Lord my God.

Hymnus

1. Abroad the regal banners fly, Now shines the cross’s mystery; Upon it Life did death endure, And yet by death did life procure. 2. Who, wounded with a direful spear, Did, purposely to wash us clear From stain of sin, pour out a flood Of precious water mixed with blood. 3. That which the prophet-king of old Hath in mysterious verse foretold, Is now accomplished, whilst we see God ruling nations from a tree. 4. O lovely and refulgent tree, Adorned with purpled majesty; Culled from a worthy stock, to bear Those limbs which sanctifièd were. 5. Blest tree, whose happy branches bore The wealth that did the world restore; The beam that did that body weigh Which raised up hell’s expected prey. 6. The following verse is said on bended knee. 7. O Cross, our one reliance, hail! This holy Passiontide avail To give fresh merit to the saint, And pardon to the penitent. 8. Blest Trinity, salvation’s spring, May every soul thy praises sing; To those thou grantest conquest by The holy cross, rewards apply. Amen.
