The Lord is risen indeed. * Alleluia.

Nocturnus I

Psalmus 1

I am who I am * and my counsel is not with the ungodly, my will is in the law of God, alleluia.

Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, * nor sat in the chair of pestilence.

  2. But his will is in the law of the Lord, * and on his law he shall meditate day and night.

  4. And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, * which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season.

  6. And his leaf shall not fall off: * and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper.

  8. Not so the wicked, not so: * but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.

  10. Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.

  11. Quóniam novit Dóminus viam jusrum: * et iter impiórum períbit.
  12. For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: * and the way of the wicked shall perish.

  13. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  14. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  15. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  16. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I am who I am * and my counsel is not with the ungodly, my will is in the law of God, alleluia.

Psalmus 2

I asked my Father, * alleluia, and he gave me nations, alleluia, as inheritance, alleluia.

Why have the Gentiles raged, * and the people devised vain things?

  1. Astitérunt reges terræ, et príncipes converunt in unum * advérsus Dóminum, et advérsus Christum ejus.
  2. The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, * against the Lord and against his Christ.

  3. Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et projiciámus a nobis jugum iprum.
  4. Let us break their bonds asunder: * and let us cast away their yoke from us.

  5. Qui hábitat in cælis, irribit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
  6. He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: * and the Lord shall deride them.

  8. Then shall he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them in his rage.

  9. Ego autem constitútus sum Rex ab eo super Sion montem sanctum ejus, * prǽdicans præcéptum ejus.
  10. But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, * preaching his commandment.

  11. Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
  12. The Lord hath said to me: * Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.

  13. Póstula a me, et dabo tibi Gentes hereditem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
  14. Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, * and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.

  15. Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
  16. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, * and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

  18. And now, O ye kings, understand: * receive instruction, you that judge the earth.

  19. Servíte Dómino in tire: * et exsultáte ei cum trere.
  20. Serve ye the Lord with fear: * and rejoice unto him with trembling.

  22. Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.

  24. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, * blessed are all they that trust in him.

  25. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  26. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  27. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  28. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I asked my Father, * alleluia, and he gave me nations, alleluia, as inheritance, alleluia.

Psalmus 3

I have slept * and have taken my rest: and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me, alleluia, alleluia.

Why, O Lord, are they multiplied that afflict me? * many are they who rise up against me.

  1. Multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * Non est salus ipsi in Deo ejus.
  2. Many say to my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.

  4. But thou, O Lord art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

  6. I have cried to the Lord with my voice: * and he hath heard me from his holy hill.

  7. Ego dormívi, et sopotus sum: * et exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.
  8. I have slept and taken my rest: * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.

  9. Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.
  10. I will not fear thousands of the people, surrounding me: * arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.

  11. Quóniam tu percussísti omnes adversántes mihi sine causa: * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.
  12. For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause: * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.

  14. Salvation is of the Lord: * and thy blessing is upon thy people.

  15. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  18. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

I have slept * and have taken my rest: and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me, alleluia, alleluia.

Lectio 1
Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
Ioannes 20:11-18

In illo témpore: María stabat ad monuméntum foris, plorans. Dum ergo fleret, inclinávit se, et prospéxit in monuméntum: et vidit duos Angelos in albis, sedéntes. Et réliqua.

At that time: But Mary stood at the sepulchre without, weeping. Now as she was weeping, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre. And so forth.

Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ
Homilia 25 in Evangelia

Mary Magdalene, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, through love of the truth washed away by her tears the befoulment of her sin, and the word of the Truth was fulfilled which He spake: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven: for she loved much. (Luke vii. 47.) She that had remained cold while she sinned, became burning when she loved. For after that she had been to the Sepulchre, and had not found there the Body of the Lord, and had believed that It had been taken away, and had told His disciples, they came and saw, and thought it was even as the woman had said, and it is written: Then the disciples went away again unto their own home but Mary stood without at the sepulchre, weeping.

Benedictio:

Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Lectio 2

In connection with this matter, we ought to ponder what great store of love there was in that woman's heart, who, when even His disciples were gone away, could not tear herself from the grave of the Lord. She sought Him Whom she had not found there, and as she sought, she wept, and the fire of love in her heart yearned after Him, Who she believed had been taken away. And so it came to pass that she, who had lingered to seek Him, was the only one who then saw Him, since the back-bone of a good work is endurance, and the voice of the Truth Himself hath said: He that endureth to the end shall be saved. (Matth. x. 22; xxi13.)

Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3

As Mary wept there, she stooped down and looked into the Sepulchre. It was but a little while and she had seen how the Sepulchre was empty, and had told that the Lord was taken away. Why then should she stoop down and look in again? But she loved Him so well, that one look was not enough; the energy of her affection constrained her to search again and again. She began by searching and not finding; but she endured in her search, and, behold, it came to pass that she found. And this was done that our own longings for Christ's presence might be taught to expand, and know that as they expand they will meet with Him to Whom they aspire.

Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.

Oratio

O God, Who dost make all nations, how diverse soever they be, to become one family in giving of praise to thy Name, grant unto all them that are born again in the fountain of baptism to live ever in oneness of faith, and godliness of works.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
