Incipit

Hymnus

1. O God of truth, O Lord of might, Who orderest time and change aright, Who send’st the early morning ray, And light’st the glow of perfect day: 2. Extinguish thou each sinful fire, And banish every ill desire; And while thou keep’st the body whole, Shed forth thy peace upon the soul. 3. Almighty Father, hear our cry, Through Jesus Christ, our Lord most High, Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee, Doth live and reign eternally. Amen.

Psalmus 40

Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: * the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.

  2. The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: * and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

  3. Dóminus opem ferat illi super lectum dolóris ejus: * univérsum stratum ejus versásti in infirmitáte ejus.
  4. The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: * thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.

  5. Ego dixi: Dómine, miserére mei: * sana ánimam meam, quia peccávi tibi.
  6. I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: * heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.

  7. Inimíci mei dixérunt mala mihi: * Quando moriétur, et períbit nomen ejus?
  8. My enemies have spoken evils against me: * when shall he die and his name perish?

  10. And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: * his heart gathered together iniquity to itself.

  11. Egrediebátur foras, * et loquebátur in idípsum.
  12. He went out * and spoke to the same purpose.

  13. Advérsum me susurrábant omnes inimíci mei: * advérsum me cogitábant mala mihi.
  14. All my enemies whispered together against me: * they devised evils to me.

  16. They determined against me an unjust word: * shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?

  17. Etenim homo pacis meæ, in quo spevi: * qui edébat panes meos, magnificávit super me supplantatiónem.
  18. For even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, * who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.

  20. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: * and I will requite them.

  21. In hoc cognóvi quóniam voluísti me: * quóniam non gaudébit inimícus meus super me.
  22. By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: * because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.

  23. Me autem propter innocéntiam suscepísti: * et confirmásti me in conspéctu tuo in ætérnum.
  24. But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence: * and hast established me in thy sight for ever.

  25. Benedíctus Dóminus, Deus Israël, a sǽculo et usque in culum: * fiat, fiat.
  26. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. * So be it. So be it.

  27. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  28. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  29. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  30. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 41 (2,6)

As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; * so my soul panteth after thee, O God.

  1. Sitívit ánima mea ad Deum fortem vivum: * quando véniam, et apparébo ante fáciem Dei?
  2. My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; * when shall I come and appear before the face of God?

  3. Fuérunt mihi lácrimæ meæ panes die ac nocte: * dum dícitur mihi quotídie: Ubi est Deus tuus?
  4. My tears have been my bread day and night, * whilst it is said to me daily: Where is thy God?

  5. Hæc recordátus sum, et effúdi in me ánimam meam: * quóniam transíbo in locum tabernáculi admirábilis, usque ad domum Dei.
  6. These things I remembered, and poured out my soul in me: * for I shall go over into the place of the wonderful tabernacle, even to the house of God:

  7. In voce exsultatiónis, et confessiónis: * sonus epulántis.
  8. With the voice of joy and praise; * the noise of one feasting.

  9. Quare tristis es, ánima mea? * et quare contúrbas me?
  10. Why art thou sad, O my soul? * and why dost thou trouble me?

  11. Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.
  12. Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

  13. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  14. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  15. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  16. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 41 (7,12)

My soul is troubled within myself: * therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan and Hermoniim, from the little hill.

  1. Abýssus abýssum ínvocat, * in voce cataractárum tuárum.
  2. Deep calleth on deep, * at the noise of thy flood-gates.

  3. Omnia excélsa tua, et fluctus tui * super me transiérunt.
  4. All thy heights and thy billows * have passed over me.

  5. In die mandávit Dóminus misericórdiam suam: * et nocte cánticum ejus.
  6. In the daytime the Lord hath commanded his mercy; * and a canticle to him in the night.

  7. Apud me orátio Deo vitæ meæ, * dicam Deo: Suscéptor meus es.
  8. With me is prayer to the God of my life. * I will say to God: Thou art my support.

  9. Quare oblítus es mei? * et quare contristátus incédo, dum afflígit me inicus?
  10. Why hast thou forgotten me? * and why go I mourning, whilst my enemy afflicteth me?

  11. Dum confringúntur ossa mea, * exprobravérunt mihi qui tríbulant me inimíci mei.
  12. Whilst my bones are broken, * my enemies who trouble me have reproached me;

* quare tristis es, ánima mea? et quare contúrbas me?
  14. Whilst they say to me day by day: Where is thy God? * Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why dost thou disquiet me?

  15. Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.
  16. Hope thou in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

  17. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  18. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  19. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  20. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Capitulum Responsorium Versus

Sir 39:6

He will give his heart to resort early to the Lord that made him, and he will pray in the sight of the most High.

Oratio

Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst gift thine holy servant Paul with great love that he might preach the mystery of thy cross, and hast been pleased that through him a new family should grow up in thy Church, grant unto us at his prayers that upon earth we may so call thy sufferings to mind as worthily to gain the fruit thereof in heaven.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.
