Hymnus

1. This the confessor of the Lord, whose triumph Now all the faithful celebrate, with gladness On this feast day year by year receiveth Merited honors. 2. Saintly and prudent, modest in behaviour, Peaceful and sober, chaste was he, and lowly. While that life’s vigour, coursing through his members, Quickened his being. 3. Sick ones of old time, to his tomb resorting, Sorely by ailments manifold afflicted, Oft-times have welcomed health and strength returning, At his petition. 4. Whence we in chorus gladly do him honour, Chanting his praises with devout affection, That in his merits we may have a portion, Now and forever. 5. His be the glory, power and salvation, Who over all things reigneth in the highest, Earth’s mighty fabric ruling and directing, Onely and Trinal. Amen.

  16. Which he made to Abraham; * and his oath to Isaac:

  17. Et státuit illud Jacob in præcéptum: * et Israël in testaméntum ætérnum:
  18. And he appointed the same to Jacob for a law, * and to Israel for an everlasting testament:

  19. Dicens: Tibi dabo terram Chánaan, * funículum hereditis vestræ.
  20. Saying: To thee will I give the land of Chanaan, * the lot of your inheritance.

  7. Constítuit eum dóminum domus suæ: * et príncipem omnis possessiónis suæ:
  8. He made him master of his house, * and ruler of all his possession.

  12. And he said that he would destroy them: * had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach:

  14. To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them; * and they set at nought the desirable land.

  7. Et effudérunt sánguinem innocéntem: * sánguinem filiórum suórum et filiárum suárum, quas sacrificavérunt sculplibus Chánaan.
  8. And they shed innocent blood: * the blood of their sons and of their daughters which they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan.

  26. Save us, O Lord, our God: * and gather us from among nations:

  28. That we may give thanks to thy holy name, * and may glory in thy praise.

  15. Quia satiávit ánimam inánem: * et ánimam esuriéntem satiávit bonis.
  16. For he hath satisfied the empty soul, * and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.

  17. Sedéntes in ténebris, et umbra mortis: * vinctos in mendicite et ferro.
  18. Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: * bound in want and in iron.

  19. Quia exacerbavérunt elóquia Dei: * et consílium Altíssimi irritarunt.
  20. Because they had exasperated the words of God: * and provoked the counsel of the most High:

  22. And their heart was humbled with labours: * they were weakened, and there was none to help them.

  18. These have seen the works of the Lord, * and his wonders in the deep.

  20. He said the word, and there arose a storm of wind: * and the waves thereof were lifted up.

  22. They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: * their soul pined away with evils.

Lectio 1
De Epístola secúnda beáti Petri Apóstoli
2 Pet 3:1-7

Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind: That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophets, and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour. Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were before, and the earth out of water, and through water, consisting by the word of God. Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men.

Benedictio:

But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance. But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up. Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness? Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat? But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth.

2 Pet 3:14-18

Amen.

Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace. And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity. Amen.

Gloria adduntur:
Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3

Ubáldus, Eugúbii in Umbria nóbili génere natus, a primis annis pietáte et lítteris egrégie est institútus; iamque adoléscens, ut uxórem dúceret, sæpe tentátus, nunquam tamen a propósito servándæ virginitátis recéssit. Sacérdos efféctus, patrimónium suum paupéribus et ecclésiis distríbuit. Canonicórum regulárium órdinis sancti Augustíni institútum suscípiens, illud in pátriam tránstulit.

St. Ubald was born of a noble family at Gubbio in Umbria, and was well trained, from his earliest years, in devotion and in letters. As a young man, he was often urged to marry, but he never gave up his determination to preserve his virginity. When he was made a priest, he distributed his patrimony to the poor and to churches. He entered the Institute of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine and brought it to his own country. Against his will, he was put over the Church of Gubbio by Pope Honorius II and given episcopal consecration. Making himself with his whole heart a model for his flock, he changed nothing in his way of life and became illustrious for every kind of virtue. Although he suffered from various infirmities for a long time, he never ceased to give thanks to God. When he had governed the Church entrusted to him for many years in a way deserving of the highest praise, he fell asleep in peace, famous for his works and miracles.

Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.

Oratio

Graciously help us, we beseech thee, O Lord, and at the petition of thy blessed Confessor and Bishop Ubald, stretch forth the right hand of thy mercy to shield us against all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
