Incipit

Psalmus 50

A contrite and a humbled heart, * O God, thou wilt not despise.

Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.

  1. Et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum, * dele iniquitátem meam.
  2. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.

  3. Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea: * et a peccáto meo munda me.
  4. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.

  5. Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: * et peccátum meum contra me est semper.
  6. For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.

  7. Tibi soli peccávi, et malum coram te feci: * ut justificéris in sermónibus tuis, et vincas cum judiris.
  8. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.

  9. Ecce enim in iniquitátibus concéptus sum: * et in peccátis concépit me mater mea.
  10. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.

  11. Ecce enim veritátem dilexísti: * incérta et occúlta sapiéntiæ tuæ manifestásti mihi.
  12. For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.

  13. Aspérges me hyssópo, et munbor: * lavábis me, et super nivem dealbor.
  14. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

  15. Audítui meo dabis gáudium et tiam: * et exsultábunt ossa humiliáta.
  16. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.

  17. Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis: * et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.
  18. Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.

  19. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: * et spíritum rectum ínnova in viscéribus meis.
  20. Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.

  21. Ne projícias me a fácie tua: * et spíritum sanctum tuum ne áuferas a me.
  22. Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.

  23. Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui: * et spíritu principáli confírma me.
  24. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.

  25. Docébo iníquos vias tuas: * et ímpii ad te converténtur.
  26. I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.

  27. Líbera me de sanguínibus, Deus, Deus salútis meæ: * et exsultábit lingua mea justítiam tuam.
  28. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.

  29. Dómine, lábia mea aries: * et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
  30. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.

  31. Quóniam si voluísses sacrifícium, dedíssem útique: * holocáustis non delecberis.
  32. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.

  33. Sacrifícium Deo spíritus contributus: * cor contrítum et humiliátum, Deus, non despícies.
  34. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

  35. Benígne fac, Dómine, in bona voluntáte tua Sion: * ut ædificéntur muri Jesalem.
  36. Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.

  37. Tunc acceptábis sacrifícium justítiæ, oblatiónes, et holocáusta: * tunc impónent super altáre tuum tulos.
  38. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

  39. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  40. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  41. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  42. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A contrite and a humbled heart, * O God, thou wilt not despise.

Psalmus 142

For thy name's sake, * O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.

Hear, O Lord, my prayer: give ear to my supplication in thy truth: * hear me in thy justice.

  1. Et non intres in judícium cum servo tuo: * quia non justificábitur in conspéctu tuo omnis vivens.
  2. And enter not into judgment with thy servant: * for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.

  3. Quia persecútus est inimícus ánimam meam: * humiliávit in terra vitam meam.
  4. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul: * he hath brought down my life to the earth.

  5. Collocávit me in obscúris sicut mórtuos sǽculi: et anxiátus est super me spíritus meus, * in me turbátum est cor meum.
  6. He hath made me to dwell in darkness as those that have been dead of old: * and my spirit is in anguish within me: my heart within me is troubled.

  7. Memor fui diérum antiquórum, meditátus sum in ómnibus opéribus tuis: * in factis mánuum tuárum medibar.
  8. I remembered the days of old, I meditated on all thy works: * I meditated upon the works of thy hands.

  9. Expándi manus meas ad te: * ánima mea sicut terra sine aqua tibi.
  10. I stretched forth my hands to thee: * my soul is as earth without water unto thee.

  11. Velóciter exáudi me, mine: * defécit spíritus meus.
  12. Hear me speedily, O Lord: * my spirit hath fainted away.

  13. Non avértas fáciem tuam a me: * et símilis ero descendéntibus in lacum.
  14. Turn not away thy face from me, * lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

  15. Audítam fac mihi mane misericórdiam tuam: * quia in te spevi.
  16. Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning; * for in thee have I hoped.

  17. Notam fac mihi viam, in qua ámbulem: * quia ad te levávi ánimam meam.
  18. Make the way known to me, wherein I should walk: * for I have lifted up my soul to thee.

  19. Eripe me de inimícis meis, Dómine, ad te congi: * doce me fácere voluntátem tuam, quia Deus meus es tu.
  20. Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, to thee have I fled: * teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God.

  21. Spíritus tuus bonus dedúcet me in terram rectam: * propter nomen tuum, Dómine, vivificábis me, in æquitáte tua.
  22. Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land: * for thy name’s sake, O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.

  23. Edúces de tribulatióne ánimam meam: * et in misericórdia tua dispérdes inimícos meos.
  24. Thou wilt bring my soul out of trouble: * and in thy mercy thou wilt destroy my enemies.

  25. Et perdes omnes, qui tríbulant ánimam meam, * quóniam ego servus tuus sum.
  26. And thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my soul: * for I am thy servant.

  27. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  28. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  29. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  30. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

For thy name's sake, * O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.

Psalmus 84

Thou wilt turn, O God, * Thou wilt quicken us and bring us to life.

Lord, thou hast blessed thy land: * thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.

  1. Remisísti iniquitátem plebis tuæ: * operuísti ómnia peccáta eórum.
  2. Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people: * thou hast covered all their sins.

  3. Mitigásti omnem iram tuam: * avertísti ab ira indignatiónis tuæ.
  4. Thou hast mitigated all thy anger: * thou hast turned away from the wrath of thy indignation.

  5. Convérte nos, Deus, salutáris noster: * et avérte iram tuam a nobis.
  6. Convert us, O God our saviour: * and turn off thy anger from us.

  7. Numquid in ætérnum irascéris nobis? * aut exténdes iram tuam a generatióne in generatiónem?
  8. Wilt thou be angry with us for ever: * or wilt thou extend thy wrath from generation to generation?

  9. Deus, tu convérsus vivifibis nos: * et plebs tua lætábitur in te.
  10. Thou wilt turn, O God, and bring us to life: * and thy people shall rejoice in thee.

  11. Osténde nobis, Dómine, misericórdiam tuam: * et salutáre tuum da nobis.
  12. Shew us, O Lord, thy mercy; * and grant us thy salvation.

  13. Audiam quid loquátur in me Dóminus Deus: * quóniam loquétur pacem in plebem suam.
  14. I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me: * for he will speak peace

  15. Et super sanctos suos: * et in eos, qui convertúntur ad cor.
  16. And unto his saints: * and unto them that are converted to the heart.

  17. Verúmtamen prope timéntes eum salutáre ipus: * ut inhábitet glória in terra nostra.
  18. Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him: * that glory may dwell in our land.

  19. Misericórdia, et véritas obviavérunt sibi: * justítia, et pax oscu sunt.
  20. Mercy and truth have met each other: * justice and peace have kissed.

  21. Véritas de terra orta est: * et justítia de cælo prospéxit.
  22. Truth is sprung out of the earth: * and justice hath looked down from heaven.

  23. Etenim Dóminus dabit benignitem: * et terra nostra dabit fructum suum.
  24. For the Lord will give goodness: * and our earth shall yield her fruit.

  25. Justítia ante eum ambubit: * et ponet in via gressus suos.
  26. Justice shall walk before him: * and shall set his steps in the way.

Amen.

Thou wilt turn, O God, * Thou wilt quicken us and bring us to life.

Nox præcéssit, dies autem appropinquávit. Abiciámus ergo ópera tenebrárum, et induámur arma lucis. * Sicut in die honéste ambulémus.

The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day.
