Psalmus 50

According to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.

Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.

2. Et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum, * dele iniquitátem meam.

And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.

3. Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea: * et a peccáto meo munda me.

Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.

4. Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: * et peccátum meum contra me est semper.

For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.

5. Tibi soli peccávi, et malum coram te feci: * ut justificéris in sermónibus tuis, et vincas cum judicáris.

To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.

6. Ecce enim in iniquitátibus concéptus sum: * et in peccátis concépit me mater mea.

For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.

7. Ecce enim veritátem dilexísti: * incérta et occúlta sapiéntiæ tuæ manifestásti mihi.

For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.

8. Aspérges me hyssópo, et mundábor: * lavábis me, et super nivem dealbábor.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

9. Audítui meo dabis gáudium et lætítiam: * et exsultábunt ossa humiliáta.

To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.

10. Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis: * et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.

Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.

11. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: * et spíritum rectum ínnova in viscéribus meis.

Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.

12. Ne projícias me a fácie tua: * et spíritum sanctum tuum ne áuferas a me.

Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.

13. Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui: * et spíritu principáli confírma me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.

14. Docébo iníquos vias tuas: * et ímpii ad te converténtur.

I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.

15. Líbera me de sanguínibus, Deus, Deus salútis meæ: * et exsultábit lingua mea justítiam tuam.

Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.

16. Dómine, lábia mea apéries: * et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.

O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.

17. Quóniam si voluísses sacrifícium, dedíssem útique: * holocáustis non delectáberis.

For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.

18. Sacrifícium Deo spíritus contribulátus: * cor contrítum et humiliátum, Deus, non despícies.

A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

19. Benígne fac, Dómine, in bona voluntáte tua Sion: * ut ædificéntur muri Jerúsalem.

Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.

20. Tunc acceptábis sacrifícium justítiæ, oblatiónes, et holocáusta: * tunc impónent super altáre tuum vítulos.

Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

21. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

22. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Distinguish my cause, O Lord, * from the nation that is not holy.

Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy: * deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.

2. Quia tu es, Deus, fortitúdo mea: † quare me repulísti? * et quare tristis incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?

For thou art God my strength: * why hast thou cast me off? and why do I go sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?

3. Emítte lucem tuam et veritátem tuam: † ipsa me deduxérunt, et adduxérunt in montem sanctum tuum, * et in tabernácula tua.

Send forth thy light and thy truth: * they have conducted me, and brought me unto thy holy hill, and into thy tabernacles.

4. Et introíbo ad altáre Dei: * ad Deum, qui lætíficat juventútem meam.

And I will go in to the altar of God: * to God who giveth joy to my youth.

5. Confitébor tibi in cíthara, Deus, Deus meus: * quare tristis es, ánima mea? et quare contúrbas me?

To thee, O God my God, I will give praise upon the harp: * why art thou sad, O my soul? and why dost thou disquiet me?

6. Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.

Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

7. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

Distinguish my cause, O Lord, * from the nation that is not holy.

May God have mercy on us * and bless us. ‡

Quæ non repetitur in Psalmo

May God have mercy on us, and bless us: * may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.

2. Ut cognoscámus in terra viam tuam, * in ómnibus Géntibus salutáre tuum.

That we may know thy way upon earth: * thy salvation in all nations.

3. Confiteántur tibi pópuli, Deus: * confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes.

Let people confess to thee, O God: * let all people give praise to thee.

4. Læténtur et exsúltent Gentes: * quóniam júdicas pópulos in æquitáte, et Gentes in terra dírigis.

Let the nations be glad and rejoice: * for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth.

5. Confiteántur tibi pópuli, Deus, confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes: * terra dedit fructum suum.

Let the people, O God, confess to thee: * let all the people give praise to thee: the earth hath yielded her fruit.

6. Benedícat nos Deus, Deus noster, benedícat nos Deus: * et métuant eum omnes fines terræ.

May God, our God bless us, may God bless us: * and all the ends of the earth fear him.

Thou shalt correct me, O Lord, * and make me to live.

I said: In the midst of my days * I shall go to the gates of hell:

2. Quæsívi resíduum annórum meórum. * Dixi: Non vidébo Dóminum Deum in terra vivéntium.

I sought for the residue of my years. * I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living.

3. Non aspíciam hóminem ultra, * et habitatórem quiétis.

I shall behold man no more, * nor the inhabitant of rest.

4. Generátio mea abláta est, et convolúta est a me, * quasi tabernáculum pastórum.

My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, * as a shepherd’s tent.

5. Præcísa est velut a texénte, vita mea: † dum adhuc ordírer, succídit me: * de mane usque ad vésperam fínies me.

My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he cut me off: * from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me.

6. Sperábam usque ad mane, * quasi leo sic contrívit ómnia ossa mea:

I hoped till morning, * as a lion so hath he broken all my bones:

7. De mane usque ad vésperam fínies me: † sicut pullus hirúndinis sic clamábo, * meditábor ut colúmba:

From morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. * I will cry like a young swallow, I will meditate like a dove:

8. Attenuáti sunt óculi mei, * suspiciéntes in excélsum.

My eyes are weakened * looking upward:

9. Dómine, vim pátior, respónde pro me. * Quid dicam, aut quid respondébit mihi, cum ipse fécerit?

Lord, I suffer violence, answer thou for me. * What shall I say, or what shall he answer for me, whereas he himself hath done it?

10. Recogitábo tibi omnes annos meos * in amaritúdine ánimæ meæ.

I will recount to thee all my years * in the bitterness of my soul.

11. Dómine, si sic vívitur, et in tálibus vita spíritus mei, † corrípies me, et vivificábis me. * Ecce, in pace amaritúdo mea amaríssima:

O Lord, if man’s life be such, and the life of my spirit be in such things as these, thou shalt correct me, and make me to live. * Behold in peace is my bitterness most bitter:

12. Tu autem eruísti ánimam meam ut non períret: * projecísti post tergum tuum ómnia peccáta mea.

But thou hast delivered my soul that it should not perish, * thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

13. Quia non inférnus confitébitur tibi, † neque mors laudábit te: * non exspectábunt qui descéndunt in lacum, veritátem tuam.

For hell shall not confess to thee, neither shall death praise thee: * nor shall they that go down into the pit, look for thy truth.

14. Vivens vivens ipse confitébitur tibi, sicut et ego hódie: * pater fíliis notam fáciet veritátem tuam.

The living, the living, he shall give praise to thee, as I do this day: * the father shall make thy truth known to the children.

15. Dómine, salvum me fac * et psalmos nostros cantábimus cunctis diébus vitæ nostræ in domo Dómini.

O Lord, save me, and we will sing our psalms all the days of our life * in the house of the Lord.

You that stand in the house of the Lord, * in the courts of the house of our God.

3. Laudáte Dóminum, quia bonus Dóminus: * psállite nómini ejus, quóniam suáve.

Praise ye the Lord, for the Lord is good: * sing ye to his name, for it is sweet.

4. Quóniam Jacob elégit sibi Dóminus, * Israël in possessiónem sibi.

For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself: * Israel for his own possession.

5. Quia ego cognóvi quod magnus est Dóminus, * et Deus noster præ ómnibus diis.

For I have known that the Lord is great, * and our God is above all gods.

6. Omnia quæcúmque vóluit, Dóminus fecit in cælo, et in terra, * in mari, et in ómnibus abýssis.

Whatsoever the Lord pleased he hath done, in heaven, in earth, * in the sea, and in all the deeps.

7. Edúcens nubes ab extrémo terræ: * fúlgura in plúviam fecit.

He bringeth up clouds from the end of the earth: * he hath made lightnings for the rain.

8. Qui prodúcit ventos de thesáuris suis: * qui percússit primogénita Ægýpti ab hómine usque ad pecus.

He bringeth forth winds out of his stores: * He slew the firstborn of Egypt from man even unto beast.

9. Et misit signa, et prodígia in médio tui, Ægýpte: * in Pharaónem, et in omnes servos ejus.

He sent forth signs and wonders in the midst of thee, O Egypt: * upon Pharao, and upon all his servants.

10. Qui percússit gentes multas: * et occídit reges fortes:

He smote many nations, * and slew mighty kings:

11. Sehon, regem Amorrhæórum, et Og, regem Basan, * et ómnia regna Chánaan.

Sehon king of the Amorrhites, and Og king of Basan, * and all the kingdoms of Chanaan.

12. Et dedit terram eórum hereditátem, * hereditátem Israël, pópulo suo.

And gave their land for an inheritance, * for an inheritance to his people Israel.

13. Dómine, nomen tuum in ætérnum: * Dómine, memoriále tuum in generatiónem et generatiónem.

Thy name, O Lord, is for ever: * thy memorial, O Lord, unto all generations.

14. Quia judicábit Dóminus pópulum suum: * et in servis suis deprecábitur.

For the Lord will judge his people, * and will be entreated in favour of his servants.

15. Simulácra Géntium argéntum et aurum: * ópera mánuum hóminum.

The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, * the works of men’s hands.

16. Os habent, et non loquéntur: * óculos habent, et non vidébunt.

They have a mouth, but they speak not: * they have eyes, but they see not.

17. Aures habent, et non áudient: * neque enim est spíritus in ore ipsórum.

They have ears, but they hear not: * neither is there any breath in their mouths.

18. Símiles illis fiant qui fáciunt ea: * et omnes qui confídunt in eis.

Let them that make them be like to them: * and every one that trusteth in them.

19. Domus Israël, benedícite Dómino: * domus Aaron, benedícite Dómino.

Bless the Lord, O house of Israel: * bless the Lord, O house of Aaron.

That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,

8. In sanctitáte, et justítia coram ipso, * ómnibus diébus nostris.

In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.

9. Et tu, puer, Prophéta Altíssimi vocáberis: * præíbis enim ante fáciem Dómini, paráre vias ejus:

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:

To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:

11. Per víscera misericórdiæ Dei nostri: * in quibus visitávit nos, óriens ex alto:

Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:

12. Illumináre his, qui in ténebris, et in umbra mortis sedent: * ad dirigéndos pedes nostros in viam pacis.

To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.
