Commemoratio ad Laudes tantum: S. Joannis Damasceni Confessoris et Ecclesiæ Doctoris
A contrite and a humbled heart, * O God, thou wilt not despise.
Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.
And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.
Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.
To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.
For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.
For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.
Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.
Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
A contrite and a humbled heart, * O God, thou wilt not despise.
For thy name's sake, * O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.
Hear, O Lord, my prayer: give ear to my supplication in thy truth: * hear me in thy justice.
And enter not into judgment with thy servant: * for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.
For the enemy hath persecuted my soul: * he hath brought down my life to the earth.
He hath made me to dwell in darkness as those that have been dead of old: * and my spirit is in anguish within me: my heart within me is troubled.
I remembered the days of old, I meditated on all thy works: * I meditated upon the works of thy hands.
I stretched forth my hands to thee: * my soul is as earth without water unto thee.
Hear me speedily, O Lord: * my spirit hath fainted away.
Turn not away thy face from me, * lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning; * for in thee have I hoped.
Make the way known to me, wherein I should walk: * for I have lifted up my soul to thee.
Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, to thee have I fled: * teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God.
Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land: * for thy name’s sake, O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.
Thou wilt bring my soul out of trouble: * and in thy mercy thou wilt destroy my enemies.
And thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my soul: * for I am thy servant.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
For thy name's sake, * O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.
Thou wilt turn, O God, * Thou wilt quicken us and bring us to life.
Lord, thou hast blessed thy land: * thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob.
Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people: * thou hast covered all their sins.
Thou hast mitigated all thy anger: * thou hast turned away from the wrath of thy indignation.
Convert us, O God our saviour: * and turn off thy anger from us.
Wilt thou be angry with us for ever: * or wilt thou extend thy wrath from generation to generation?
Thou wilt turn, O God, and bring us to life: * and thy people shall rejoice in thee.
Shew us, O Lord, thy mercy; * and grant us thy salvation.
I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me: * for he will speak peace
And unto his saints: * and unto them that are converted to the heart.
Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him: * that glory may dwell in our land.
Mercy and truth have met each other: * justice and peace have kissed.
Truth is sprung out of the earth: * and justice hath looked down from heaven.
For the Lord will give goodness: * and our earth shall yield her fruit.
Justice shall walk before him: * and shall set his steps in the way.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Thou wilt turn, O God, * Thou wilt quicken us and bring us to life.
When thou art angry, * O Lord, thou wilt remember mercy.
O Lord, I have heard thy hearing, * and was afraid.
O Lord, thy work, * in the midst of the years bring it to life:
In the midst of the years thou shalt make it known: * when thou art angry, thou wilt remember mercy.
God will come from the south, * and the holy one from mount Pharan:
His glory covered the heavens, * and the earth is full of his praise.
His brightness shall be as the light: * horns are in his hands:
There is his strength hid: * Death shall go before his face.
And the devil shall go forth before his feet. * He stood and measured the earth.
He beheld, and melted the nations: * and the ancient mountains were crushed to pieces.
The hills of the world were bowed down * by the journeys of his eternity.
I saw the tents of Ethiopia for their iniquity, * the curtains of the land of Madian shall be troubled.
Wast thou angry, O Lord, with the rivers? * or was thy wrath upon the rivers? or thy indignation in the sea?
Who will ride upon thy horses: * and thy chariots are salvation.
Thou wilt surely take up thy bow: * according to the oaths which thou hast spoken to the tribes.
Thou wilt divide the rivers of the earth. The mountains saw thee, and were grieved: * the great body of waters passed away.
The deep put forth its voice: * the deep lifted up its hands.
The sun and the moon stood still in their habitation, * in the light of thy arrows, they shall go in the brightness of thy glittering spear.
In thy anger thou wilt tread the earth under foot: * in thy wrath thou wilt astonish the nations.
Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people: * for salvation with thy Christ.
Thou struckest the head of the house of the wicked: * thou hast laid bare his foundation even to the neck.
Thou hast cursed his sceptres, the head of his warriors, * them that came out as a whirlwind to scatter me.
Their joy * was like that of him that devoureth the poor man in secret.
Thou madest a way in the sea for thy horses, * in the mud of many waters.
I have heard and my bowels were troubled: * my lips trembled at the voice.
Let rottenness enter into my bones, * and swarm under me.
That I may rest in the day of tribulation: * that I may go up to our people that are girded.
For the fig tree shall not blossom: * and there shall be no spring in the vines.
The labour of the olive tree shall fail: * and the fields shall yield no food:
The flock shall be cut off from the fold, * and there shall be no herd in the stalls.
But I will rejoice in the Lord: * and I will joy in God my Jesus.
The Lord God is my strength: * and he will make my feet like the feet of harts:
And he the conqueror will lead me upon my high places * singing psalms.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
When thou art angry, * O Lord, thou wilt remember mercy.
Praise thy God, * O Sion, who declareth his judgments to Israel.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: * praise thy God, O Sion.
Because he hath strengthened the bolts of thy gates * he hath blessed thy children within thee.
Who hath placed peace in thy borders: * and filleth thee with the fat of corn.
Who sendeth forth his speech to the earth: * his word runneth swiftly.
Who giveth snow like wool: * scattereth mists like ashes.
He sendeth his crystal like morsels: * who shall stand before the face of his cold?
He shall send out his word, and shall melt them: * his wind shall blow, and the waters shall run.
Who declareth his word to Jacob: * his justices and his judgments to Israel.
He hath not done in like manner to every nation: * and his judgments he hath not made manifest to them.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Praise thy God, * O Sion, who declareth his judgments to Israel.
Veníte, mittámus lignum in panem eius, † et eradámus eum de terra vivéntium, * et nomen eius non memorétur ámplius.
Come, let us put wood on his bread, and cut him off from the land of the living, and let his name be remembered no more.
1. Thirty years among us dwelling, His appointed time fulfilled, Born for this, he meets his passion, For that this he freely willed: On the cross the Lamb is lifted, Where his life-blood shall be spilled. 2. He endured the nails, the spitting, Vinegar, and spear, and reed; From that holy body broken Blood and water forth proceed: Earth, and stars, and sky, and ocean, By that flood from stain are free. 3. Faithful cross! above all other, One and only noble tree! None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peers may be; Sweetest wood and sweetest iron! Sweetest weight is hung on thee. 4. Bend thy boughs, O tree of glory! Thy relaxing sinews bend; For awhile the ancient rigour, That thy birth bestowed, suspend; And the King of heavenly beauty On thy bosom gently tend! 5. Thou alone wast counted worthy This world's ransom to uphold; For a shipwrecked race preparing Harbour, like the ark of old; With the sacred blood anointed From the smitten Lamb that rolled. 6. To the Trinity be glory Everlasting, as is meet; Equal to the Father, equal To the Son, and Paraclete: Trinal Unity, whose praises All created things repeat. Amen.
Now the Jews' Feastday * was at hand, and the chief Priests sought how they might kill Jesus; but they feared the people.
Blessed be the Lord + God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David his servant:
As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning:
Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament,
The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us,
That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,
In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:
Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Now the Jews' Feastday * was at hand, and the chief Priests sought how they might kill Jesus; but they feared the people.
« Pater Noster » dicitur totum secreto.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.
We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts, that all we who of our own will do check our sins with the curb of mortification, may suffer here, and escape condemnation to eternal punishment hereafter.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
O Almighty and everlasting God, Who didst fill Thy blessed servant John with heavenly teaching, and wondrous strength of spirit to maintain the honouring of holy images. Grant unto us at his prayers and after his example to take pattern by their holy lives whose images we honour, and ever to feel the power of their help.
℟.
Ant. Well done, thou good and faithful servant thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, saith the Lord.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.
