Sabbato Sancto

Ad Laudes

Psalmus 50

O death, I will be thy death; * O grave, I will be thy destruction.

Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.

  1. Et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum, * dele iniquitátem meam.
  2. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.

  3. Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea: * et a peccáto meo munda me.
  4. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.

  5. Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: * et peccátum meum contra me est semper.
  6. For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.

  8. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.

  9. Ecce enim in iniquitátibus concéptus sum: * et in peccátis concépit me mater mea.
  10. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.

  12. For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.

  13. Aspérges me hyssópo, et munbor: * lavábis me, et super nivem dealbor.
  14. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

  15. Audítui meo dabis gáudium et tiam: * et exsultábunt ossa humiliáta.
  16. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.

  17. Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis: * et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.
  18. Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.

  19. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: * et spíritum rectum ínnova in viscéribus meis.
  20. Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.

  21. Ne projícias me a fácie tua: * et spíritum sanctum tuum ne áuferas a me.
  22. Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.

  23. Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui: * et spíritu principáli confírma me.
  24. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.

  26. I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.

  27. Líbera me de sanguínibus, Deus, Deus salútis meæ: * et exsultábit lingua mea justítiam tuam.
  28. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.

  29. Dómine, lábia mea aries: * et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
  30. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.

  32. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.

  34. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

  35. Benígne fac, Dómine, in bona voluntáte tua Sion: * ut ædificéntur muri Jesalem.
  36. Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.

  37. Tunc acceptábis sacrifícium justítiæ, oblatiónes, et holocáusta: * tunc impónent super altáre tuum tulos.
  38. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

O death, I will be thy death; * O grave, I will be thy destruction.

Psalmus 91

They shall mourn for Him * as one mourneth for his only son, for the innocent Lord hath been put to death.

It is good to give praise to the Lord: * and to sing to thy name, O most High.

  2. To shew forth thy mercy in the morning, * and thy truth in the night:

  3. In decachórdo, psalrio: * cum cántico, in thara.
  4. Upon an instrument of ten strings, upon the psaltery: * with a canticle upon the harp.

  5. Quia delectásti me, Dómine, in factúra tua: * et in opéribus mánuum tuárum exsulbo.
  6. For thou hast given me, O Lord, a delight in thy doings: * and in the works of thy hands I shall rejoice.

  7. Quam magnificáta sunt ópera tua, mine! * nimis profúndæ factæ sunt cogitatiónes tuæ.
  8. O Lord, how great are thy works! * thy thoughts are exceeding deep.

  10. The senseless man shall not know: * nor will the fool understand these things.

  12. When the wicked shall spring up as grass: * and all the workers of iniquity shall appear:

  14. That they may perish for ever and ever: * but thou, O Lord, art most high for evermore.

  15. Quóniam ecce inimíci tui, Dómine, quóniam ecce inimíci tui períbunt: * et dispergéntur omnes, qui operántur iniquitem.
  16. For behold thy enemies, O Lord, for behold thy enemies shall perish: * and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

  17. Et exaltábitur sicut unicórnis cornu meum: * et senéctus mea in misericórdia úberi.
  18. But my horn shall be exalted like that of the unicorn: * and my old age in plentiful mercy.

  19. Et despéxit óculus meus inimícos meos: * et in insurgéntibus in me malignántibus áudiet auris mea.
  20. My eye also hath looked down upon my enemies: * and my ear shall hear of the downfall of the malignant that rise up against me.

  21. Justus, ut palma flobit: * sicut cedrus Líbani multiplibitur.
  22. The just shall flourish like the palm tree: * he shall grow up like the cedar of Libanus.

  23. Plantáti in domo mini, * in átriis domus Dei nostri flobunt.
  24. They that are planted in the house of the Lord * shall flourish in the courts of the house of our God.

  26. They shall still increase in a fruitful old age: * and shall be well treated, that they may shew,

  28. That the Lord our God is righteous, * and there is no iniquity in him.

They shall mourn for Him * as one mourneth for his only son, for the innocent Lord hath been put to death.

Psalmus 63

O all ye nations, behold * and see my sorrow.

Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: * deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy.

  1. Protexísti me a convéntu malignántium: * a multitúdine operántium iniquitem.
  2. Thou hast protected me from the assembly of the malignant; * from the multitude of the workers of iniquity.

  3. Quia exacuérunt ut gládium linguas suas: * intendérunt arcum rem amáram, ut sagíttent in occúltis immacutum.
  4. For they have whetted their tongues like a sword; * they have bent their bow a bitter thing, to shoot in secret the undefiled.

  6. They will shoot at him on a sudden, and will not fear: * they are resolute in wickedness.

  7. Narravérunt ut abscónderent queos: * dixérunt: Quis vibit eos?
  8. They have talked of hiding snares; * they have said: Who shall see them?

  9. Scrutáti sunt iniquites: * defecérunt scrutántes scrunio.
  10. They have searched after iniquities: * they have failed in their search.

  12. Man shall come to a deep heart: * and God shall be exalted.

  14. The arrows of children are their wounds: * and their tongues against them are made weak.

  16. All that saw them were troubled; * and every man was afraid.

  17. Et annuntiavérunt ópera Dei, * et facta ejus intellerunt.
  18. And they declared the works of God: * and understood his doings.

  19. Lætábitur justus in Dómino, et spebit in eo: * et laudabúntur omnes recti corde.
  20. The just shall rejoice in the Lord, and shall hope in him: * and all the upright in heart shall be praised.

O all ye nations, behold * and see my sorrow.

Canticum: Canticum Ezechiæ [4]

From the gates of hell * deliver my soul, O Lord.

I said: In the midst of my days * I shall go to the gates of hell:

  1. Quæsívi resíduum annórum meórum. * Dixi: Non vidébo Dóminum Deum in terra vivéntium.
  2. I sought for the residue of my years. * I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living.

  3. Non aspíciam hóminem ultra, * et habitatórem quiétis.
  4. I shall behold man no more, * nor the inhabitant of rest.

  6. My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, * as a shepherd’s tent.

  7. Præcísa est velut a texénte, vita mea: dum adhuc ordírer, sucdit me: * de mane usque ad vésperam fínies me.
  8. My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he cut me off: * from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me.

  9. Sperábam usque ad mane, * quasi leo sic contrívit ómnia ossa mea:
  10. I hoped till morning, * as a lion so hath he broken all my bones:

  12. From morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. * I will cry like a young swallow, I will meditate like a dove:

  13. Attenuáti sunt óculi mei, * suspiciéntes in excélsum.
  14. My eyes are weakened * looking upward:

  15. Dómine, vim pátior, respónde pro me.
  16. Lord, I suffer violence, answer thou for me. * What shall I say, or what shall he answer for me, whereas he himself hath done it?

  17. Recogitábo tibi omnes annos meos * in amaritúdine áni meæ.
  18. I will recount to thee all my years * in the bitterness of my soul.

  19. Dómine, si sic vívitur, et in tálibus vita spíritus mei, corrípies me, et vivifibis me. * Ecce, in pace amaritúdo mea amaríssima:
  20. O Lord, if man’s life be such, and the life of my spirit be in such things as these, thou shalt correct me, and make me to live. * Behold in peace is my bitterness most bitter:

  22. But thou hast delivered my soul that it should not perish, * thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

  24. For hell shall not confess to thee, neither shall death praise thee: * nor shall they that go down into the pit, look for thy truth.

  25. Vivens vivens ipse confitébitur tibi, sicut et ego die: * pater fíliis notam fáciet veritátem tuam.
  26. The living, the living, he shall give praise to thee, as I do this day: * the father shall make thy truth known to the children.

  27. Dómine, salvum me fac * et psalmos nostros cantábimus cunctis diébus vitæ nostræ in domo mini.
  28. O Lord, save me, and we will sing our psalms all the days of our life * in the house of the Lord.

From the gates of hell * deliver my soul, O Lord.

Psalmus 150

O all ye that pass by * behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.

Praise ye the Lord in his holy places: * praise ye him in the firmament of his power.

  1. Laudáte eum in virtútibus ejus: * laudáte eum secúndum multitúdinem magnitúdinis ejus.
  2. Praise ye him for his mighty acts: * praise ye him according to the multitude of his greatness.

  3. Laudáte eum in sono tubæ: * laudáte eum in psaltério, et thara.
  4. Praise him with sound of trumpet: * praise him with psaltery and harp.

  5. Laudáte eum in týmpano, et choro: * laudáte eum in chordis, et órgano.
  6. Praise him with timbrel and choir: * praise him with strings and organs.

  7. Laudáte eum in cýmbalis benesonántibus: laudáte eum in cýmbalis jubilatiónis: * omnis spíritus laudet minum.
  8. Praise him on high sounding cymbals: praise him on cymbals of joy: * let every spirit praise the Lord.

O all ye that pass by * behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.

Versus

Canticum: Canticum Zachariæ

There were women sitting over against the sepulchre * weeping, and making lamentation for the Lord.

Blessed be the Lord + God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:

  1. Et eréxit cornu satis nobis: * in domo David, púeri sui.
  2. And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David his servant:

  4. As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning:

  6. Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:

  8. To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament,

  10. The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us,

  12. That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear,

  13. In sanctitáte, et justítia coram ipso, * ómnibus diébus nostris.
  14. In holiness and justice before him, * all our days.

  15. Et tu, puer, Prophéta Altíssimi voberis: * præíbis enim ante fáciem Dómini, paráre vias ejus:
  16. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:

  17. Ad dandam sciéntiam salútis plebi ejus: * in remissiónem peccatórum eórum:
  18. To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins:

  20. Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:

  22. To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace.

There were women sitting over against the sepulchre * weeping, and making lamentation for the Lord.
