Die Septima Januarii

Tempora: Ad Romános, cap. 9

Ad Matutinum

Incipit

Invitatorium

Christ appeared to us, * O come, let us worship Him.

Hymnus

1. Why, impious Herod, vainly fear That Christ the Saviour cometh here? He takes no earthly realms away Who gives the crown that lasts for aye. 2. To greet His birth the Wise Men went, Led by the star before them sent; Called on by light, towards light they pressed, And by their gifts their God confessed. 3. In holy Jordan's purest wave The heavenly Lamb vouchsafed to lave; That He, to whom was sin unknown, Might cleanse His people from their own. 4. New miracle of power divine! The water reddens into wine: He spake the word: and poured the wave In other streams than nature gave. 5. All glory, Lord, to thee we pay For thine Epiphany to-day: All glory, as is ever meet, To Father and to Paraclete. Amen.

  8. Why shall I fear in the evil day? * the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

  9. Qui confídunt in virte sua: * et in multitúdine divitiárum suárum gloriántur.
  10. They that trust in their own strength, * and glory in the multitude of their riches,

  11. Frater non rédimit, rédimet homo: * non dabit Deo placatiónem suam.
  12. No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: * he shall not give to God his ransom,

  13. Et prétium redemptiónis ánimæ suæ: * et laborábit in ætérnum, et vivet adhuc in finem.

Be not thou afraid * the things which made him rich, or his glory shall not descend with him to the sepulchre.

  2. They are laid in hell like sheep: * death shall feed upon them.

  3. Et dominabúntur eórum justi in matuno: * et auxílium eórum veteráscet in inférno a glória eórum.
  4. And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; * and their help shall decay in hell from their glory.

  5. Verúmtamen Deus rédimet ánimam meam de manu ínferi: * cum accéperit me.
  6. But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, * when he shall receive me.

  8. Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, * and when the glory of his house shall be increased.

  10. For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; * nor shall his glory descend with him.

  11. Quia ánima ejus in vita ipsíus beneditur: * confitébitur tibi cum beneféceris ei.
  12. For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: * and he will praise thee when thou shalt do well to him.

  14. He shall go in to the generations of his fathers: * and he shall never see light.

  5. Os tuum abundávit matia: * et lingua tua concinnábat dolos.
  6. Thy mouth hath abounded with evil, * and thy tongue framed deceits.

  7. Sedens advérsus fratrem tuum loquebáris, et advérsus fílium matris tuæ ponébas scándalum: * hæc fecísti, et cui.
  8. Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother’s son: * these things hast thou done, and I was silent.

  10. Thou thoughtest unjustly that I should be like to thee: * but I will reprove thee, and set before thy face.

Thou shalt accept the sacrifice * of justice, upon thy altar, O Lord.

Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.

  1. Et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum, * dele iniquitátem meam.
  2. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.

  3. Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea: * et a peccáto meo munda me.
  4. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.

  5. Quóniam iniquitátem meam ego cognósco: * et peccátum meum contra me est semper.
  6. For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.

  8. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged.

  9. Ecce enim in iniquitátibus concéptus sum: * et in peccátis concépit me mater mea.
  10. For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.

  12. For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.

  13. Aspérges me hyssópo, et munbor: * lavábis me, et super nivem dealbor.
  14. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

  15. Audítui meo dabis gáudium et lætiam: * et exsultábunt ossa humiliáta.
  16. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.

  17. Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis: * et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.
  18. Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.

  19. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: * et spíritum rectum ínnova in viscéribus meis.
  20. Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.

  21. Ne projícias me a fácie tua: * et spíritum sanctum tuum ne áuferas a me.
  22. Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.

  23. Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui: * et spíritu principáli confírma me.
  24. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.

  26. I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.

  27. Líbera me de sanguínibus, Deus, Deus salútis meæ: * et exsultábit lingua mea justítiam tuam.
  28. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.

  29. Dómine, lábia mea aries: * et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
  30. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.

  32. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.

  34. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

  35. Benígne fac, Dómine, in bona voluntáte tua Sion: * ut ædificéntur muri Jesalem.
  36. Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.

  37. Tunc acceptábis sacrifícium justítiæ, oblatiónes, et holocáusta: * tunc impónent super altáre tuum tulos.
  38. Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.

  39. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  40. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  41. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  42. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Thou shalt accept the sacrifice * of justice, upon thy altar, O Lord.

Amen.

I speak the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost: That I have great sadness, and continual sorrow in my heart. For I wished myself to be an anathema from Christ, for my brethren, who are my kinsmen according to the flesh, Who are Israelites, to whom belongeth the adoption as of children, and the glory, and the testament, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises: Whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all things, God blessed for ever. Amen.

Benedictio:

Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Lectio 2
Rom 9:6-10

Not as though the word of God hath miscarried. For all are not Israelites that are of Israel: Neither are all they that are the seed of Abraham, children; but in Isaac shall thy seed be called: That is to say, not they that are the children of the flesh, are the children of God; but they, that are the children of the promise, are accounted for the seed. For this is the word of promise: According to this time will I come; and Sara shall have a son. And not only she. But when Rebecca also had conceived at once, of Isaac our father.

Gloria adduntur:
Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3
Rom 9:11-16

For when the children were not yet born, nor had done any good or evil that the purpose of God, according to election, might stand, Not of works, but of him that calleth, it was said to her: The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written: Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated. What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.

Oratio

O God, Who by the leading of a star didst, as on this day, manifest thine Only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, which know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead:
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
