Invitatorium

The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.

Hymnus

1. This the confessor of the Lord, whose triumph Now all the faithful celebrate, with gladness On this feast day year by year receiveth Merited honors. 2. Saintly and prudent, modest in behaviour, Peaceful and sober, chaste was he, and lowly. While that life’s vigour, coursing through his members, Quickened his being. 3. Sick ones of old time, to his tomb resorting, Sorely by ailments manifold afflicted, Oft-times have welcomed health and strength returning, At his petition. 4. Whence we in chorus gladly do him honour, Chanting his praises with devout affection, That in his merits we may have a portion, Now and forever. 5. His be the glory, power and salvation, Who over all things reigneth in the highest, Earth’s mighty fabric ruling and directing, Onely and Trinal. Amen.

Nocturnus I

Psalmus 61

In God is my salvation * and my glory: and my hope is in God.

Shall not my soul be subject to God? * for from him is my salvation.

  2. For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my protector, I shall be moved no more.

  3. Quoúsque irrúitis in minem? * interfícitis univérsi vos: tamquam paríeti inclináto et macériæ depúlsæ?
  4. How long do you rush in upon a man? * you all kill, as if you were thrusting down a leaning wall, and a tottering fence.

  5. Verúmtamen prétium meum cogitavérunt repéllere, cucúrri in siti: * ore suo benedicébant, et corde suo maledibant.
  6. But they have thought to cast away my price; I ran in thirst: * they blessed with their mouth, but cursed with their heart.

  7. Verúmtamen Deo subjécta esto, ánima mea: * quóniam ab ipso patiéntia mea.
  8. But be thou, O my soul, subject to God: * for from him is my patience.

  10. For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my helper, I shall not be moved.

  11. In Deo salutáre meum, et glória mea: * Deus auxílii mei, et spes mea in Deo est.
  12. In God is my salvation and my glory: * he is the God of my help, and my hope is in God.

  13. Speráte in eo omnis congregátio pópuli, effúndite coram illo corda vestra: * Deus adjútor noster in ætérnum.
  14. Trust in him, all ye congregation of people: pour out your hearts before him. * God is our helper for ever.

  15. Verúmtamen vani fílii hóminum, mendáces fílii hóminum in staris: * ut decípiant ipsi de vanitáte in idípsum.
  16. But vain are the sons of men, the sons of men are liars in the balances: * that by vanity they may together deceive.

  17. Nolíte speráre in iniquitáte, et rapínas nolíte concuscere: * divítiæ si áffluant, nolíte cor apnere.
  18. Trust not in iniquity, and cover not robberies: * if riches abound, set not your heart upon them.

  19. Semel locútus est Deus, duo hæc audívi, quia potéstas Dei est, et tibi, Dómine, misericórdia: * quia tu reddes unicuíque juxta ópera sua.
  20. God hath spoken once, these two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God, and mercy to thee, O Lord; * for thou wilt render to every man according to his works.

  21. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  22. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  23. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  24. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

In God is my salvation * and my glory: and my hope is in God.

Psalmus 65 (1,12)

Behold the works of the Lord * and make the voice of his praise to be heard.

Shout with joy to God, all the earth, sing ye a psalm to his name; * give glory to his praise.

  1. Dícite Deo: Quam terribília sunt ópera tua, mine! * in multitúdine virtútis tuæ mentiéntur tibi inimíci tui.
  2. Say unto God, How terrible are thy works, O Lord! * in the multitude of thy strength thy enemies shall lie to thee.

  3. Omnis terra adóret te, et psallat tibi: * psalmum dicat nómini tuo.
  4. Let all the earth adore thee, * and sing to thee: let it sing a psalm to thy name.

  5. Veníte, et vidéte ópera Dei: * terríbilis in consíliis super fílios minum.
  6. Come and see the works of God; * who is terrible in his counsels over the sons of men.

  7. Qui convértit mare in áridam, in flúmine pertransíbunt pede: * ibi lætábimur in ipso.
  8. Who turneth the sea into dry land, in the river they shall pass on foot: * there shall we rejoice in him.

  10. Who by his power ruleth for ever: his eyes behold the nations; * let not them that provoke him be exalted in themselves.

  11. Benedícite, Gentes, Deum nostrum: * et audítam fácite vocem laudis ejus,
  12. O bless our God, ye Gentiles: * and make the voice of his praise to be heard.

  14. Who hath set my soul to live: * and hath not suffered my feet to be moved:

  15. Quóniam probásti nos, Deus: * igne nos examinásti, sicut examinátur argéntum.
  16. For thou, O God, hast proved us: * thou hast tried us by fire, as silver is tried.

  17. Induxísti nos in láqueum, posuísti tribulatiónes in dorso nostro: * imposuísti hómines super cápita nostra.
  18. Thou hast brought us into a net, thou hast laid afflictions on our back: * thou hast set men over our heads.

  20. We have passed through fire and water, * and thou hast brought us out into a refreshment.

Amen.

Behold the works of the Lord * and make the voice of his praise to be heard.

Psalmus 65 (13,20)

Come and hear, all ye that fear God * what great things he hath done for my soul.

I will go into thy house with burnt offerings: * I will pay thee my vows, which my lips have uttered,

  1. Et locútum est os meum, * in tribulatióne mea.
  2. And my mouth hath spoken, * when I was in trouble.

  3. Holocáusta medulláta ófferam tibi cum incénso aetum: * ófferam tibi boves cum hircis.
  4. I will offer up to thee holocausts full of marrow, with burnt offerings of rams: * I will offer to thee bullocks with goats.

  6. Come and hear, all ye that fear God, * and I will tell you what great things he hath done for my soul.

  8. I cried to him with my mouth: * and I extolled him with my tongue.

  10. If I have looked at iniquity in my heart, * the Lord will not hear me.

  11. Proptérea exaudívit Deus, * et atténdit voci deprecatiónis meæ.
  12. Therefore hath God heard me, * and hath attended to the voice of my supplication.

  13. Benedíctus Deus, * qui non amóvit oratiónem meam, et misericórdiam suam a me.
  14. Blessed be God, * who hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

  15. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  18. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Come and hear, all ye that fear God * what great things he hath done for my soul.

Psalmus 67 (1,11)

Let God arise, * and let his enemies be scattered. ‡

Quæ non repetitur in Psalmo

Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: * and let them that hate him flee from before his face.

  1. Sicut déficit fumus, deciant: * sicut fluit cera a fácie ignis, sic péreant peccatóres a cie Dei.
  2. As smoke vanisheth, so let them vanish away: * as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

  3. Et justi epuléntur, et exsúltent in conspéctu Dei: * et delecténtur intia.
  4. And let the just feast, and rejoice before God: * and be delighted with gladness.

  5. Cantáte Deo, psalmum dícite mini ejus: * iter fácite ei, qui ascéndit super occásum: Dóminus nomen illi.
  6. Sing ye to God, sing a psalm to his name, * make a way for him who ascendeth upon the west: (bow head) the Lord is his name.

  7. Exsultáte in conspéctu ejus: * turbabúntur a fácie ejus, patris orphanórum et júdicis viduárum.
  8. Rejoice ye before him: * but the wicked shall be troubled at his presence, who is the father of orphans, and the judge of widows.

  9. Deus in loco sancto suo: * Deus, qui inhabitáre facit uníus moris in domo:
  10. God in his holy place: * God who maketh men of one manner to dwell in a house:

  11. Qui edúcit vinctos in fortidine, * simíliter eos qui exásperant, qui hábitant in sepúlcris.
  12. Who bringeth out them that were bound in strength; * in like manner them that provoke, that dwell in sepulchres.

  13. Deus, cum egrederéris in conspéctu puli tui, * cum pertransíres in desérto:
  14. O God, when thou didst go forth in the sight of thy people, * when thou didst pass through the desert:

  15. Terra mota est, étenim cæli distillavérunt a fácie Dei nai, * a fácie Dei Israël.
  16. The earth was moved, and the heavens dropped at the presence of the God of Sinai, * at the presence of the God of Israel.

  18. Thou shalt set aside for thy inheritance a free rain, * O God: and it was weakened, but thou hast made it perfect.

  19. Animália tua habibunt in ea: * parásti in dulcédine tua páuperi, Deus.
  20. In it shall thy animals dwell; * in thy sweetness, O God, thou hast provided for the poor.

  21. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spitui Sancto.
  22. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  23. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæcurum. Amen.
  24. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Let God arise, * and let his enemies be scattered. ‡

Psalmus 67 (12,24)

Our God * is the God of salvation: and the Lord of the issues from death.

The Lord shall give the word to them that preach good tidings, * with great power.

  1. Rex virtútum dilécti dilécti: * et speciéi domus divídere spólia.
  2. The king of powers is of the beloved, * of the beloved; and the beauty of the house shall divide spoils.

  4. If you sleep among the midst of lots, you shall be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, * and the hinder parts of her back with the paleness of gold.

  5. Dum discérnit cæléstis reges super eam, nive dealbabúntur in Selmon: * mons Dei, mons pinguis.
  6. When he that is in heaven appointeth kings over her, * they shall be whited with snow in Selmon.

  7. Mons coagutus, mons pinguis: * ut quid suspicámini montes coagutos?
  8. The mountain of God is a fat mountain, a curdled mountain, a fat mountain; * Why suspect, ye curdled mountains?

  9. Mons, in quo beneplácitum est Deo habire in eo: * étenim Dóminus habitábit in finem.
  10. A mountain in which God is well pleased to dwell: * for there the Lord shall dwell unto the end.

  11. Currus Dei decem míllibus múltiplex, mílliatántium: * Dóminus in eis in Sina in sancto.
  12. The chariot of God is attended by ten thousands; thousands of them that rejoice: * the Lord is among them in Sinai, in the holy place.

  13. Ascendísti in altum, cepísti captivitem: * accepísti dona in honibus.
  14. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; * thou hast received gifts in men.

  15. Etenim non credéntes, * inhabitáre Dóminum Deum.
  16. Yea for those also that do not believe, * the dwelling of the Lord God.

  17. Benedíctus Dóminus die quodie: * prósperum iter fáciet nobis Deus salutárium nostrórum.
  18. Blessed be the Lord day by day: * the God of our salvation will make our journey prosperous to us.

  19. Deus noster, Deus salvos faciéndi: * et Dómini Dómini éxitus mortis.
  20. Our God is the God of salvation: * and of the Lord, of the Lord are the issues from death.

  21. Verúmtamen Deus confrínget cápita inimirum suórum: * vérticem capílli perambulántium in delíctis suis.
  22. But God shall break the heads of his enemies: * the hairy crown of them that walk on in their sins.

  23. Dixit Dóminus: Ex Basan convértam, * convértam in profúndum maris:
  24. The Lord said: I will turn them from Basan, * I will turn them into the depth of the sea:

  26. That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thy enemies; * the tongue of thy dogs be red with the same.

  27. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  28. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  29. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Our God * is the God of salvation: and the Lord of the issues from death.

Psalmus 67 (25,36)

In the churches * bless ye God the Lord.

They have seen thy goings, O God, * the goings of my God: of my king who is in his sanctuary.

  1. Prævenérunt príncipes conjúncti psalléntibus: * in médio juvenculárum tympanistriárum.
  2. Princes went before joined with singers, * in the midst of young damsels playing on timbrels.

  3. In ecclésiis benedícite Deo mino, * de fóntibus Israël.
  4. In the churches bless ye God the Lord, * from the fountains of Israel.

  5. Ibi Bénjamin adolescéntulus: * in mentis excéssu.
  6. There is Benjamin a youth, * in ecstasy of mind.

  10. Command thy strength, O God: * confirm, O God, what thou hast wrought in us.

  11. A templo tuo in Jesalem, * tibi ófferent reges nera.
  12. From thy temple in Jerusalem, * kings shall offer presents to thee.

  14. Rebuke the wild beasts of the reeds, the congregation of bulls with the kine of the people; * who seek to exclude them who are tried with silver.

  15. Díssipa Gentes, quæ bella volunt: vénient legáti ex Ægýpto: * Æthiópia prævéniet manus ejus Deo.
  16. Scatter thou the nations that delight in wars: ambassadors shall come out of Egypt: * Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands to God.

  17. Regna terræ, cantáte Deo: * psállite mino.
  18. Sing to God, ye kingdoms of the earth: * sing ye to the Lord:

  21. Ecce dabit voci suæ vocem virtútis, date glóriam Deo super Israël, * magnificéntia ejus, et virtus ejus in bibus.
  22. Behold he will give to his voice the voice of power: * give ye glory to God for Israel, * his magnificence, and his power is in the clouds.

Psalmus 68 (2,13)

Save me, O God * for the waters are come in even unto my soul. ‡

Quæ non repetitur in Psalmo

Save me, O God: * for the waters are come in even unto my soul.

  2. I stick fast in the mire of the deep: * and there is no sure standing.

  3. Veni in altitúdinem maris: * et tempéstas demérsit me.
  4. I am come into the depth of the sea: * and a tempest hath overwhelmed me.

  5. Laborávi clamans, raucæ factæ sunt fauces meæ: * defecérunt óculi mei, dum spero in Deum meum.
  6. I have laboured with crying; my jaws are become hoarse: * my eyes have failed, whilst I hope in my God.

  7. Multiplicáti sunt super capíllos cápitis mei, * qui odérunt me gratis.
  8. They are multiplied above the hairs of my head, * who hate me without cause.

  10. My enemies are grown strong who have wrongfully persecuted me: * then did I pay that which I took not away.

  12. O God, thou knowest my foolishness; * and my offences are not hidden from thee.

  13. Non erubéscant in me qui exspéctant te, mine, * Dómine virtum
  14. Let not them be ashamed for me, who look for thee, O Lord, * the Lord of hosts.

  15. Non confundántur super me * qui quærunt te, Deus Israël.
  16. Let them not be confounded on my account, * who seek thee, O God of Israel.

  17. Quóniam propter te sustínui oppróbrium: * opéruit confúsio fáciem meam.
  18. Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; * shame hath covered my face.

  19. Extráneus factus sum frátribus meis, * et peregrínus fíliis matris meæ.
  20. I am become a stranger to my brethren, * and an alien to the sons of my mother.

  21. Quóniam zelus domus tuæ comédit me: * et oppróbria exprobrántium tibi cecidérunt super me.
  22. For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up: * and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

  23. Et opérui in jejúnio ánimam meam: * et factum est in oppróbrium mihi.
  24. And I covered my soul in fasting: * and it was made a reproach to me.

  25. Et pósui vestiméntum meum cicium: * et factus sum illis in pabolam.
  26. And I made haircloth my garment: * and I became a byword to them.

  27. Advérsum me loquebántur, qui sedébant in porta: * et in me psallébant qui bibébant vinum.
  28. They that sat in the gate spoke against me: * and they that drank wine made me their song.

  29. Ego vero oratiónem meam ad te, mine: * tempus benepláciti, Deus.
  30. But as for me, my prayer is to thee, O Lord; * for the time of thy good pleasure, O God.

  31. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  32. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  33. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  34. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Save me, O God * for the waters are come in even unto my soul. ‡

Psalmus 68 (14,29)

O Lord, save me * from my enemies.

In the multitude of thy mercy hear me, * in the truth of thy salvation.

  1. Eripe me de luto, ut non ingar: * líbera me ab iis, qui odérunt me, et de profúndis aquárum.
  2. Draw me out of the mire, that I may not stick fast: * deliver me from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

  3. Non me demérgat tempéstas aquæ, neque absórbeat me profúndum: * neque úrgeat super me púteus os suum.
  4. Let not the tempest of water drown me, nor the deep swallow me up: * and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

  5. Exáudi me, Dómine, quóniam benígna est misericórdia tua: * secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum réspice in me.
  6. Hear me, O Lord, for thy mercy is kind; * look upon me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

  7. Et ne avértas fáciem tuam a púero tuo: * quóniam tríbulor, velóciter exáudi me.
  8. And turn not away thy face from thy servant: * for I am in trouble, hear me speedily.

  9. Inténde ánimæ meæ, et líbera eam: * propter inimícos meos éripe me.
  10. Attend to my soul, and deliver it: * save me because of my enemies.

  11. Tu scis impropérium meum, et confusiónem meam, * et reveréntiam meam.
  12. Thou knowest my reproach, and my confusion, * and my shame.

  14. In thy sight are all they that afflict me; * my heart hath expected reproach and misery.

  16. And I looked for one that would grieve together with me, * but there was none: and for one that would comfort me, and I found none.

  17. Et dedérunt in escam meam fel: * et in siti mea potavérunt me ato.
  18. And they gave me gall for my food, * and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

  19. Fiat mensa eórum coram ipsis in queum, * et in retributiónes, et in scándalum.
  20. Let their table become as a snare before them, * and a recompense, and a stumblingblock.

  22. Let their eyes be darkened that they see not; * and their back bend thou down always.

  23. Effúnde super eos iram tuam: * et furor iræ tuæ comprehéndat eos.
  24. Pour out thy indignation upon them: * and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

  26. Let their habitation be made desolate: * and let there be none to dwell in their tabernacles.

  28. Because they have persecuted him whom thou hast smitten; * and they have added to the grief of my wounds.

  30. Add thou iniquity upon their iniquity: * and let them not come into thy justice.

  32. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; * and with the just let them not be written.

  33. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  34. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  35. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  36. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O Lord, save me * from my enemies.

Psalmus 68 (30,37)

Look for the Lord * and your soul shall live.

I am poor and sorrowful: * thy salvation, O God, hath set me up.

  2. I will praise the name of God with a canticle: * and I will magnify him with praise.

  3. Et placébit Deo super vítulum novéllum: * córnua producéntem et úngulas.
  4. And it shall please God better than a young calf, * that bringeth forth horns and hoofs.

  5. Vídeant páuperes et læténtur: * quǽrite Deum, et vivet ánima vestra.
  6. Let the poor see and rejoice: * seek ye God, and your soul shall live.

  8. For the Lord hath heard the poor: * and hath not despised his prisoners.

  9. Laudent illum cæli et terra, * mare et ómnia reptília in eis.
  10. Let the heavens and the earth praise him; * the sea, and every thing that creepeth therein.

  11. Quóniam Deus salvam fáciet Sion: * et ædificabúntur civitátes Juda.
  12. For God will save Sion, * and the cities of Juda shall be built up.

  13. Et inhabitábunt ibi, * et hereditáte acquírent eam.
  14. And they shall dwell there, * and acquire it by inheritance.

Versus

Pater

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.

Absolutio.

I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called, With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity. Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. One body and one Spirit; as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all.

Benedictio:

But to every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the giving of Christ. Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive; he gave gifts to men. Now that he ascended, what is it, but because he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

Eph 4:11-15

And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Until we all meet into the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ; That henceforth we be no more children tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the wickedness of men, by cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive. But doing the truth in charity, we may in all things grow up in him who is the head, even Christ:

Gloria adduntur:
Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3

Mórtuo Granério, epíscopus consecrátus, novum órdinem sanctimoniálium instítuit, a Visitatióne beátæ Vírginis nuncupátum. Suis scriptis cælésti doctrína refértis Ecclésiam illustrávit. Lugdúni, gravi morbo corréptus, migrávit in cælum, anno millésimo sexcentésimo vigésimo secúndo, et a summo Pontífice Pio nono, ex sacrórum Rítuum Congregatiónis consúlto, universális Ecclésiæ Doctor fuit declarátus.

Francis was born of devout and noble parents in the town of Sales, from which his family took its name. He was given a liberal education, devoted himself to the study of philosophy and theology at Paris and gained the degree of Doctor in civil and canon law at Padua. When he had been ordained priest and made provost of the church of Geneva, he carried out the duties of his office so well that Bishop de Granier sent him to preach the word of God in Chablais in order to win the inhabitants away from the heresy of Calvin. He undertook this mission with such great zeal and overcame so many dangers with the help of God that he is said to have brought back to the Catholic faith some seventy-two thousand heretics. When de Granier died, Francis was consecrated bishop. He founded a new order of nuns, named for the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin, and enlightened the Church with writings filled with heavenly teaching. At Lyon, he was seized by a grave illness and departed to heaven in the year 1622. He was declared a Doctor of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX.

Oratio

O God, Who didst will that thy Blessed Confessor and Bishop Francis should become all things to all men, mercifully grant unto us, that we being filled with the sweetness of thy heavenly love, may so take to ourselves his admonitions and be succoured by his prayers, that in the end we may with him attain unto thine everlasting joy.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
