Let us come before the presence of the Lord * and make a joyful noise unto Him with Psalms.

1. Hail day! whereon the One in Three First formed the earth by sure decree, The day its Maker rose again, And vanquished death, and burst our chain. 2. Away with sleep and slothful ease We raise our hearts and bend our knees, And early seek the Lord of all, Obedient to the Prophet's call. 3. That He may hearken to our prayer, Stretch forth His strong right arm to spare, And ev'ry past offense forgiven, Restore us to our home in heaven. 4. Assembled here this holy day, This holiest hour we raise the lay, And O that He to whom we sing, May now reward our offering! 5. O Father of unclouded light! Keep us this day as in thy sight, In word and deed that we may be From ev'ry touch of evil free. 6. That this our body's mortal frame May know no sin, and fear no shame, Nor fire hereafter be the end Of passions which our bosom rend. 7. Redeemer of the world, we pray That thou wouldst wash our sins away, And give us, of Thy boundless grace, The blessings of the heavenly place. 8. Blessed is the man * who studieth the law of the Lord.

Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, * nor sat in the chair of pestilence.

  1. Sed in lege Dómini volúntas ejus, * et in lege ejus meditábitur die ac nocte.

    2. But his will is in the law of the Lord, * and on his law he shall meditate day and night.

  2. Et erit tamquam lignum, quod plantátum est secus decúrsus aquárum, * quod fructum suum dabit in témpore suo:

    3. And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, * which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season.

  3. Et fólium ejus non défluet: * et ómnia quæcúmque fáciet, prosperabúntur.

    4. And his leaf shall not fall off: * and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper.

  4. Non sic ímpii, non sic: * sed tamquam pulvis, quem prójicit ventus a fácie terræ.

    5. Not so the wicked, not so: * but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.

  5. Ideo non resúrgent ímpii in judício: * neque peccatóres in concílio justórum.

    6. Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.

  6. Quóniam novit Dóminus viam justórum: * et iter impiórum períbit.

    7. For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: * and the way of the wicked shall perish.

Serve ye the Lord * with fear: and rejoice unto him with trembling.

Why have the Gentiles raged, * and the people devised vain things?

  1. Astitérunt reges terræ, et príncipes convenérunt in unum * advérsus Dóminum, et advérsus Christum ejus.

    2. The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, * against the Lord and against his Christ.

  2. Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et projiciámus a nobis jugum ipsórum.

    3. Let us break their bonds asunder: * and let us cast away their yoke from us.

  3. Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.

    4. He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: * and the Lord shall deride them.

  4. Tunc loquétur ad eos in ira sua, * et in furóre suo conturbábit eos.

    5. Then shall he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them in his rage.

  5. Ego autem constitútus sum Rex ab eo super Sion montem sanctum ejus, * prǽdicans præcéptum ejus.

    6. But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, * preaching his commandment.

  6. Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.

    7. The Lord hath said to me: * Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.

  7. Póstula a me, et dabo tibi Gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.

    8. Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, * and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.

  8. Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.

    9. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, * and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

  9. Et nunc, reges, intellígite: * erudímini, qui judicátis terram.

    10. And now, O ye kings, understand: * receive instruction, you that judge the earth.

  10. Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.

    11. Serve ye the Lord with fear: * and rejoice unto him with trembling.

  11. Apprehéndite disciplínam, nequándo irascátur Dóminus, * et pereátis de via justa.

    12. Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.

  12. Cum exárserit in brevi ira ejus: * beáti omnes qui confídunt in eo.

    13. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, * blessed are all they that trust in him.

Why, O Lord, are they multiplied that afflict me? * many are they who rise up against me.

  1. Multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * Non est salus ipsi in Deo ejus.

    2. Many say to my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.

  2. Tu autem, Dómine, suscéptor meus es, * glória mea, et exáltans caput meum.

    3. But thou, O Lord art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

  3. Voce mea ad Dóminum clamávi: * et exaudívit me de monte sancto suo.

    4. I have cried to the Lord with my voice: * and he hath heard me from his holy hill.

  4. Ego dormívi, et soporátus sum: * et exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.

    5. I have slept and taken my rest: * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.

  5. Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.

    6. I will not fear thousands of the people, surrounding me: * arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.

  6. Quóniam tu percussísti omnes adversántes mihi sine causa: * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.

    7. For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause: * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.

    8. Salvation is of the Lord: * and thy blessing is upon thy people.

O Lord our Lord, * how admirable is thy name in the whole earth!

  1. Quóniam eleváta est magnificéntia tua, * super cælos.

    2. For thy magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.

  2. Ex ore infántium et lacténtium perfecísti laudem propter inimícos tuos, * ut déstruas inimícum et ultórem.

    3. Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise, because of thy enemies, * that thou mayst destroy the enemy and the avenger.

  3. Quóniam vidébo cælos tuos, ópera digitórum tuórum: * lunam et stellas, quæ tu fundásti.

    4. For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers: * the moon and the stars which thou hast founded.

    5. What is man that thou art mindful of him? * or the son of man that thou visitest him?

Thou hast sat on the throne * who judgest justice.

I will give praise to thee, O Lord, with my whole heart: * I will relate all thy wonders.

  1. Lætábor et exsultábo in te: * psallam nómini tuo, Altíssime.

    2. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: * I will sing to thy name, O thou most high.

  2. In converténdo inimícum meum retrórsum: * infirmabúntur, et períbunt a fácie tua.

    3. When my enemy shall be turned back: * they shall be weakened and perish before thy face.

  3. Quóniam fecísti judícium meum et causam meam: * sedísti super thronum, qui júdicas justítiam.

    4. For thou hast maintained my judgment and my cause: * thou hast sat on the throne, who judgest justice.

  4. Increpásti Gentes, et périit ímpius: * nomen eórum delésti in ætérnum, et in sǽculum sǽculi.

    5. Thou hast rebuked the Gentiles, and the wicked one hath perished: * thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever.

  5. Inimíci defecérunt frámeæ in finem: * et civitátes eórum destruxísti.

    6. The swords of the enemy have failed unto the end: * and their cities thou hast destroyed.

  6. Périit memória eórum cum sónitu: * et Dóminus in ætérnum pérmanet.

    7. Their memory hath perished with a noise. * But the Lord remaineth for ever.

  7. Parávit in judício thronum suum: * et ipse judicábit orbem terræ in æquitáte, judicábit pópulos in justítia.

    8. He hath prepared his throne in judgment: * And he shall judge the world in equity, he shall judge the people in justice.

  8. Et factus est Dóminus refúgium páuperi: * adjútor in opportunitátibus, in tribulatióne.

    9. And the Lord is become a refuge for the poor: * a helper in due time in tribulation.

  9. Et sperent in te qui novérunt nomen tuum: * quóniam non dereliquísti quæréntes te, Dómine.

    10. And let them trust in thee who know thy name: * for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord.

Psalmus 9 (12,21)

Arise, O Lord, * let not man prevail.

Sing ye to the Lord, who dwelleth in Sion: * declare his ways among the Gentiles.

  1. Quóniam requírens sánguinem eórum recordátus est: * non est oblítus clamórem páuperum.

    2. For requiring their blood he hath remembered them: * he hath not forgotten the cry of the poor.

  2. Miserére mei, Dómine: * vide humilitátem meam de inimícis meis.

    3. Have mercy on me, O Lord: * see my humiliation which I suffer from my enemies.

  3. Qui exáltas me de portis mortis, * ut annúntiem omnes laudatiónes tuas in portis fíliæ Sion.

    4. Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death, * that I may declare all thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion.

  4. Exsultábo in salutári tuo: * infíxæ sunt Gentes in intéritu, quem fecérunt.

    5. I will rejoice in thy salvation: * the Gentiles have stuck fast in the destruction which they have prepared.

  5. In láqueo isto, quem abscondérunt, * comprehénsus est pes eórum.

    6. Their foot hath been taken * in the very snare which they hid.

  6. Cognoscétur Dóminus judícia fáciens: * in opéribus mánuum suárum comprehénsus est peccátor.

    7. The Lord shall be known when he executeth judgments: * the sinner hath been caught in the works of his own hands.

  7. Convertántur peccatóres in inférnum, * omnes Gentes quæ obliviscúntur Deum.

    8. The wicked shall be turned into hell, * all the nations that forget God.

  8. Quóniam non in finem oblívio erit páuperis: * patiéntia páuperum non períbit in finem.

    9. For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end: * the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever.

  9. Exsúrge, Dómine, non confortétur homo: * judicéntur Gentes in conspéctu tuo.

    10. Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened: * let the Gentiles be judged in thy sight.

  10. Constítue, Dómine, legislatórem super eos: * ut sciant Gentes quóniam hómines sunt.

    11. Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them: * that the Gentiles may know themselves to be but men.

Why, O Lord, hast thou retired afar off? * why dost thou slight us in our wants, in the time of trouble?

  1. Dum supérbit ímpius, incénditur pauper: * comprehendúntur in consíliis quibus cógitant.

    2. Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire: * they are caught in the counsels which they devise.

  2. Quóniam laudátur peccátor in desidériis ánimæ suæ: * et iníquus benedícitur.

    3. For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul: * and the unjust man is blessed.

  3. Exacerbávit Dóminum peccátor, * secúndum multitúdinem iræ suæ non quæret.

    4. The sinner hath provoked the Lord, * according to the multitude of his wrath he will not seek him.

  4. Non est Deus in conspéctu ejus: * inquinátæ sunt viæ illíus in omni témpore.

    5. God is not before his eyes: * his ways are filthy at all times.

  5. Auferúntur judícia tua a fácie ejus: * ómnium inimicórum suórum dominábitur.

    6. Thy judgments are removed from his sight: * he shall rule over all his enemies.

  6. Dixit enim in corde suo: * Non movébor a generatióne in generatiónem sine malo.

    7. For he hath said in his heart: * I shall not be moved from generation to generation, and shall be without evil.

  7. Cujus maledictióne os plenum est, et amaritúdine, et dolo: * sub lingua ejus labor et dolor.

    8. His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit: * under his tongue are labour and sorrow.

  8. Sedet in insídiis cum divítibus in occúltis: * ut interfíciat innocéntem.

    9. He sitteth in ambush with the rich, in private places, * that he may kill the innocent.

  9. Oculi ejus in páuperem respíciunt: * insidiátur in abscóndito, quasi leo in spelúnca sua.

    10. His eyes are upon the poor man: * he lieth in wait, in secret, like a lion in his den.

  10. Insidiátur ut rápiat páuperem: * rápere páuperem, dum áttrahit eum.

    11. He lieth in ambush, that he may catch the poor man: * so catch the poor, whilst he draweth him to him.

  11. In láqueo suo humiliábit eum: * inclinábit se, et cadet, cum dominátus fúerit páuperum.

    12. In his net he will bring him down, * he will crouch and fall, when he shall have power over the poor.

  12. Dixit enim in corde suo: Oblítus est Deus, * avértit fáciem suam ne vídeat in finem.

    13. For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten, * he hath turned away his face, not to see to the end.

Arise, O Lord God, let thy hand be exalted: * forget not the poor.

  1. Propter quid irritávit ímpius Deum? * dixit enim in corde suo: Non requíret.

    2. Wherefore hath the wicked provoked God? * for he hath said in his heart: He will not require it.

  2. Vides quóniam tu labórem et dolórem consíderas: * ut tradas eos in manus tuas.

    3. Thou seest it, for thou considerest labour and sorrow: * that thou mayst deliver them into thy hands.

  3. Tibi derelíctus est pauper: * órphano tu eris adjútor.

    4. To thee is the poor man left: * thou wilt be a helper to the orphan.

  4. Cóntere bráchium peccatóris et malígni: * quærétur peccátum illíus, et non inveniétur.

    5. Break thou the arm of the sinner and of the malignant: * his sin shall be sought, and shall not be found.

    6. The Lord shall reign to eternity, yea, for ever and ever: * ye Gentiles shall perish from his land.

  6. Desidérium páuperum exaudívit Dóminus: * præparatiónem cordis eórum audívit auris tua.

    7. The Lord hath heard the desire of the poor: * thy ear hath heard the preparation of their heart.

  7. Judicáre pupíllo et húmili, * ut non appónat ultra magnificáre se homo super terram.

    8. To judge for the fatherless and for the humble, * that man may no more presume to magnify himself upon earth.

Psalmus 10

The Lord is just * and He hath loved justice.

In the Lord I put my trust: how then do you say to my soul: * Get thee away from hence to the mountain, like a sparrow?

  1. Quóniam ecce peccatóres intendérunt arcum, † paravérunt sagíttas suas in pháretra, * ut sagíttent in obscúro rectos corde.

    2. For, lo, the wicked have bent their bow: they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, * to shoot in the dark the upright of heart.

  2. Quóniam quæ perfecísti, destruxérunt: * justus autem quid fecit?

    3. For they have destroyed the things which thou hast made: * but what has the just man done?

  3. Dóminus in templo sancto suo, * Dóminus in cælo sedes ejus.

    4. The Lord is in his holy temple, * the Lord’s throne is in heaven.

  4. Oculi ejus in páuperem respíciunt: * pálpebræ ejus intérrogant fílios hóminum.

    5. His eyes look on the poor man: * his eyelids examine the sons of men.

  5. Dóminus intérrogat justum et ímpium: * qui autem díligit iniquitátem, odit ánimam suam.

    6. The Lord trieth the just and the wicked: * but he that loveth iniquity, hateth his own soul.

  6. Pluet super peccatóres láqueos: * ignis, et sulphur, et spíritus procellárum pars cálicis eórum.

    7. He shall rain snares upon sinners: * fire and brimstone, and storms of winds, shall be the portion of their cup.

  7. Quóniam justus Dóminus, et justítias diléxit: * æquitátem vidit vultus ejus.

    8. For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice: * his countenance hath beheld righteousness.

Gen 12:1-6

Dixit autem Dóminus ad Abram: Egrédere de terra tua, et de cognatióne tua, et de domo patris tui, et veni in terram quam monstrábo tibi. Faciámque te in gentem magnam, et benedícam tibi, et magnificábo nomen tuum, erísque benedíctus. Benedícam benedicéntibus tibi, et maledícam maledicéntibus tibi, atque in te benedicéntur univérsæ cognatiónes terræ. Egréssus est ítaque Abram sicut præcéperat ei Dóminus, et ivit cum eo Lot: septuagínta quinque annórum erat Abram cum egrederétur de Haran. Tulítque Sárai uxórem suam, et Lot fílium fratris sui, universámque substántiam quam posséderant, et ánimas quas fécerant in Haran: et egréssi sunt ut irent in terram Chánaan. Cumque veníssent in eam, Pertransívit Abram terram usque ad locum Sichem, usque ad convállem illústrem: Chananǽus autem tunc erat in terra.

And the Lord said to Abram: Go forth out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and out of thy father's house, and come into the land which I shall show thee. And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and magnify thy name, and thou shalt be blessed. I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee, and in thee shall all the kindred of the earth be blessed: So Abram went out as the Lord had commanded him, and Lot went with him: Abram was seventy-five years old when he went forth from Haran. And he took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all the substance which they had gathered, and the souls which they had gotten in Haran: and they went out to go into the land of Chanaan. And when they were come into it, Abram passed through the country into the place of Sichem, as far as the noble vale: now the Chanaanite was at that time in the land.

Et inde transgrédiens ad montem, qui erat contra oriéntem Bethel, teténdit ibi tabernáculum suum, ab occidénte habens Bethel, et ab oriénte Hai: ædificávit quoque ibi altáre Dómino, et invocávit nomen eius. Perrexítque Abram vadens, et ultra progrédiens ad merídiem. Facta est autem fames in terra: descendítque Abram in Ægýptum, ut peregrinarétur ibi: prævalúerat enim fames in terra. Cumque prope esset ut ingrederétur Ægýptum, dixit Sárai uxóri suæ: Novi quod pulchra sis múlier: Et quod cum víderint te Ægýptii, dictúri sunt: Uxor ipsíus est: et interfícient me, et te reservábunt. And the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him: To thy seed will I give this land. And he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And passing on from thence to a mountain, that was on the east side of Bethel, he there pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east; he built there also an altar to the Lord, and called upon his name. And Abram went forward, going, and proceeding on to the south. And there came a famine in the country; and Abram went down into Egypt, to sojourn there: for the famine was very grievous in the land. And when he was near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife: I know that thou art a beautiful woman: And that when the Egyptians shall see thee, they will say: She is his wife: and they will kill me, and keep thee. Say, therefore, I pray thee, that thou art my sister: that I may be well used for thee, and that my soul may live for thy sake.

And they used Abram well for her sake. And he had sheep and oxen, and he asses, and men servants and maid servants, and she asses, and camels. But the Lord scourged Pharao and his house with most grievous stripes for Sarai, Abram's wife. And Pharao called Abram, and said to him: What is this that thou hast done to me? Why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? For what cause didst thou say, she was thy sister, that I might take her to my wife? Now, therefore, there is thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

Redémptor noster, prǽvidens ex passióne sua discipulórum ánimos perturbándos, eis longe ante et eiúsdem passiónis pœnam, et resurrectiónis suæ glóriam prædíxit: ut cum eum moriéntem, sicut prædíctum est, cérnerent; étiam resurrectúrum non dubitárent. Sed quia carnáles adhuc discípuli nullo modo valébant cápere verba mystérii, venítur ad miráculum. Our Redeemer, foreseeing that the minds of His disciples would be troubled by His suffering, told them long before both of the pains of that suffering, and of the glory of His rising again, to the end that, when they should see Him die as He had prophesied, they might not doubt that He was likewise to rise again. But, since His disciples were yet carnal, and could not receive the words telling of this mystery, He wrought a miracle before them. A blind man received his sight before their eyes, that if they could not receive heavenly things by words, they might be persuaded of heavenly things by deeds.
