Ad Matutinum

Incipit

Invitatorium

Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.

Hymnus

1. The fast, as taught by holy lore, We keep in solemn course once more: The fast to all men known, and bound In forty days of yearly round. 2. The law and seers that were of old In diverse ways this Lent foretold, Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide, In after ages sanctified. 3. More sparing therefore let us make The words we speak, the food we take, Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred Be every sense in holy guard. 4. Avoid the evil thoughts that roll Like waters o’er the heedless soul; Nor let the foe occasion find Our souls in slavery to bind. 5. In prayer together let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before the Judge’s feet, And his avenging wrath entreat. 6. Thy grace have we offended sore, By sins, O God, which we deplore; But pour upon us from on high, O pardoning One, thy clemency. 7. Remember thou, though frail we be, That yet thine handiwork are we; Nor let the honour of thy name Be by another put to shame. 8. Forgive the sin that we have wrought; Increase the good that we have sought: That we at length, our wanderings o'er, May please thee here and evermore. 9. Grant O thou Blessed Trinity, Grant, O Essential Unity, That this our fast of forty days May work our profit and thy praise. Amen.

  28. And he turned the storm into a breeze: * and its waves were still.

  29. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  30. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  31. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  32. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

These have seen * the works of the Lord, and his wonders.

Psalmus 106 (31,43)

The just see and rejoice * and understand the mercy of the Lord.

Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, * and his wonderful works to the children of men.

  1. Et exáltent eum in ecclésia plebis: * et in cáthedra seniórum laudent eum.
  2. And let them exalt him in the church of the people: * and praise him in the chair of the ancients.

  3. Pósuit flúmina in desértum: * et éxitus aquárum in sitim.
  4. He hath turned rivers into a wilderness: * and the sources of water into dry ground:

  5. Terram fructíferam in salginem: * a malítia inhabitántium in ea.
  6. A fruitful land into barrenness, * for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

  7. Pósuit desértum in stagna aquárum: * et terram sine aqua in éxitus aquárum.
  8. He hath turned a wilderness into pools of water, * and a dry land into water springs.

  9. Et collocávit illic esuriéntes: * et constituérunt civitátem habitatiónis.
  10. And hath placed there the hungry; * and they made a city for their habitation.

  11. Et seminavérunt agros, et plantarunt neas: * et fecérunt fructum nativitis.
  12. And they sowed fields, and planted vineyards: * and they yielded fruit of birth.

  14. And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly: * and their cattle he suffered not to decrease.

  16. Then they were brought to be few: * and they were afflicted through the trouble of evils and sorrow.

  18. Contempt was poured forth upon their princes: *and he caused them to wander where there was no passing, and out of the way.

  20. And he helped the poor out of poverty: * and made him families like a flock of sheep.

  21. Vidébunt recti, et tabúntur: * et omnis iníquitas oppilábit os suum.
  22. The just shall see, and shall rejoice, * and all iniquity shall stop their mouth.

  23. Quis sápiens et cusdiet hæc? * et intélliget misericórdias mini.
  24. Who is wise, and will keep these things: * and will understand the mercies of the Lord?

  25. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  26. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  27. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  28. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The just see and rejoice * and understand the mercy of the Lord.

Pater

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.

Absolutio. A vínculis peccatórum nostrórum absólvat nos omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus.
℟. Amen.
Benedictio:

Evangélica léctio sit nobis salus et protéctio.

Lectio 1
Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Ioánnem
Ioannes 8:1-11

In illo témpore: Perréxit Iesus in montem Olivéti, et dilúculo íterum venit in templum. Et réliqua.

In that time, Jesus went unto Mount Olivet. And early in the morning he came again into the temple. And so on.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi
Tract. 33 in Ioannem, post init.

Iesus perréxit in montem Olivéti, in montem fructuósum, in montem unguénti, in montem chrísmatis.

Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives, even unto that fruitful Mount, that anointing Mount, that Mount of Chrism. Where else became it Christ to teach, if not on the Mount of Olives? For the word Christ is derived from Chrisma, and Chrisma is the Greek for ointment. He hath anointed us that we may be able to wrestle with the devil. And, early in the morning, He came again into the temple; and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them and no man laid hands on Him, because He was not yet pleased to suffer. And now listen how His enemies tried the Lord's meekness.

Benedictio:

Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.

Lectio 2

And the Scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto Him: Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now, Moses in the law commanded that such should be stoned; but what sayest Thou? This they said, tempting Him, that they might have to accuse Him. Whereof to accuse Him? Had they taken Him in any sin? Or was the woman said to have anything to do with Him?

Benedictio:

Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.

Lectio 3

Intellegámus, fratres, admirábilem mansuetúdinem in Dómino fuísse.

We must understand, my brethren, that there was a wonderful gentleness in the Lord. They knew that He was most mild and most gentle. Of Him indeed it had been said of old time: Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most Mighty! In thy comeliness and thy beauty go forward, fare prosperously, and reign, because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness. (Ps. xli4, 5.) And He came bringing truth as one that teacheth, meekness as one that delivereth, and righteousness as one that knoweth. Because of these it was that the Prophet declared, in the Holy Ghost, that He was to reign. Whenever He spake, truth shone forth whenever He spared His enemies, meekness was made glorious. And His enemies, racked with envy and hatred by His truth and His meekness, laid a stumbling-block for His righteousness.

Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandæ sint.

Oratio

O Almighty God, grant, we beseech thee, that as many as, to afflict the body, do abstain from meats, may, by following after righteousness, fast from sin.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
