Psalmus 138 (1,13)

Lord, * thou hast proved me, and known me. ‡

Quæ non repetitur in Psalmo

Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me: * thou hast known my sitting down, and my rising up.

  2. Thou hast understood my thoughts afar off: * my path and my life thou hast searched out.

  4. And thou hast foreseen all my ways: * for there is no speech on my tongue.

  5. Ecce, Dómine, tu cognovísti ómnia novíssima, et anqua: * tu formásti me, et posuísti super me manum tuam.
  6. Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and those of old: * thou hast formed me, and hast laid thy hand upon me.

  8. Thy knowledge is become wonderful to me: * it is high, and I cannot reach to it.

  9. Quo ibo a spíritu tuo? * et quo a fácie tua giam?
  10. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? * or whither shall I flee from thy face?

  11. Si ascéndero in lum, tu illic es: * si descéndero in inférnum, ades.
  12. If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: * if I descend into hell, thou art present.

  14. If I take my wings early in the morning, * and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:

  15. Etenim illuc manus tua decet me: * et tenébit me déxtera tua.
  16. Even there also shall thy hand lead me: * and thy right hand shall hold me.

  17. Et dixi: Fórsitan ténebræ conculbunt me: * et nox illuminátio mea in delíciis meis.
  18. And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: * and night shall be my light in my pleasures.

  20. But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light as the day: * the darkness thereof, and the light thereof are alike to thee.

  21. Quia tu possedísti renes meos: * suscepísti me de útero matris meæ.
  22. For thou hast possessed my reins: * thou hast protected me from my mother’s womb.

  23. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  24. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  25. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  26. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Lord, * thou hast proved me, and known me. ‡

Psalmus 138 (14,24)

Wonderful are thy works * and my soul knoweth right well.

I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: * wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well.

  2. My bone is not hidden from thee, which thou hast made in secret: * and my substance in the lower parts of the earth.

  3. Imperféctum meum vidérunt óculi tui, et in libro tuo omnes scribéntur: * dies formabúntur, et nemo in eis.
  4. Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written: * days shall be formed, and no one in them.

  6. But to me thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honourable: * their principality is exceedingly strengthened.

  7. Dinumerábo eos, et super arénam multiplicabúntur: * exsurréxi, et adhuc sum tecum.
  8. I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand: * I rose up and am still with thee.

  9. Si occíderis, Deus, peccares: * viri sánguinum, declináte a me.
  10. If thou wilt kill the wicked, O God: * ye men of blood, depart from me:

  11. Quia dícitis in cogitatióne: * Accípient in vanitáte civitátes tuas.
  12. Because you say in thought: * They shall receive thy cities in vain.

  13. Nonne qui odérunt te, Dómine, óderam? * et super inimícos tuos tabescébam?
  14. Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hated thee: * and pined away because of thy enemies?

  16. I have hated them with a perfect hatred: * and they are become enemies to me.

  17. Proba me, Deus, et scito cor meum: * intérroga me, et cognósce sémitas meas.
  18. Prove me, O God, and know my heart: * examine me, and know my paths.

  19. Et vide, si via iniquitátis in me est: * et deduc me in via ætérna.
  20. And see if there be in me the way of iniquity: * and lead me in the eternal way.

  21. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  22. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  23. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  24. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Wonderful are thy works * and my soul knoweth right well.

Psalmus 139

Do not thou forsake me, * O Lord, the strength of my salvation.

Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: * rescue me from the unjust man.

  1. Qui cogitavérunt iniquitátes in corde: * tota die constituébant prǽlia.
  2. Who have devised iniquities in their hearts: * all the day long they designed battles.

  3. Acuérunt linguas suas sicut serpéntis: * venénum áspidum sub lábiis eórum.
  4. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: * the venom of asps is under their lips.

  5. Custódi me, Dómine, de manu peccaris: * et ab homínibus iníquis éripe me.
  6. Keep me, O Lord, from the hand of the wicked: * and from unjust men deliver me.

  7. Qui cogitavérunt supplantáre gressus meos: * abscondérunt supérbi láqueum mihi:
  8. Who have proposed to supplant my steps: * the proud have hidden a net for me.

  9. Et funes extendérunt in queum: * juxta iter scándalum posuérunt mihi.
  10. And they have stretched out cords for a snare: * they have laid for me a stumbling block by the wayside.

  11. Dixi Dómino: Deus meus es tu: * exáudi, Dómine, vocem deprecatiónis meæ.
  12. I said to the Lord: Thou art my God: * hear, O Lord, the voice of my supplication.

  13. Dómine, Dómine, virtus salútis meæ: * obumbrásti super caput meum in die belli.
  14. O Lord, Lord, the strength of my salvation: * thou hast overshadowed my head in the day of battle.

  15. Ne tradas me, Dómine, a desidério meo peccatóri: cogitavérunt contra me, * ne derelínquas me, ne forte exalténtur.
  16. Give me not up, O Lord, from my desire to the wicked: * they have plotted against me; do not thou forsake me, lest they should triumph.

  17. Caput circúitus eórum: * labor labiórum ipsórum opériet eos.
  18. The head of them compassing me about: * the labour of their lips shall overwhelm them.

  19. Cadent super eos carbónes, in ignem dejícies eos: * in misériis non subsístent.
  20. Burning coals shall fall upon them; thou wilt cast them down into the fire: * in miseries they shall not be able to stand.

  21. Vir linguósus non dirigétur in terra: * virum injústum mala cápient in intéritu.
  22. A man full of tongue shall not be established in the earth: * evil shall catch the unjust man unto destruction.

  23. Cognóvi quia fáciet Dóminus judícium ínopis: * et vindíctam páuperum.
  24. I know that the Lord will do justice to the needy, * and will revenge the poor.

  26. But as for the just, they shall give glory to thy name: * and the upright shall dwell with thy countenance.

  27. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  28. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  29. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  30. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Do not thou forsake me, * O Lord, the strength of my salvation.

Psalmus 140

I have cried to thee, * O Lord, hear me. ‡

Quæ non repetitur in Psalmo

I have cried to thee, O Lord, hear me: * hearken to my voice, when I cry to thee.

  1. Dirigátur orátio mea sicut incénsum in conspéctu tuo: * elevátio mánuum meárum sacrifícium vespernum.
  2. Let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight; * the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice.

  3. Pone, Dómine, custódiam ori meo: * et óstium circumstántiæ lábiis meis.
  4. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth: * and a door round about my lips.

  6. Incline not my heart to evil words; * to make excuses in sins.

  8. With men that work iniquity: * and I will not communicate with the choicest of them.

  9. Corrípiet me justus in misericórdia, et increbit me: * óleum autem peccatóris non impínguet caput meum.
  10. The just man shall correct me in mercy, and shall reprove me: * but let not the oil of the sinner fatten my head.

  11. Quóniam adhuc et orátio mea in beneplácitis eórum: * absórpti sunt juncti petræ júdices eórum.
  12. For my prayer also shall still be against the things with which they are well pleased: * their judges falling upon the rock have been swallowed up.

  13. Audient verba mea quóniam potuérunt: * sicut crassitúdo terræ erúpta est super terram.
  14. They shall hear my words, for they have prevailed: * as when the thickness of the earth is broken up upon the ground.

  16. Our bones are scattered by the side of hell. * But to thee, O Lord, Lord, are my eyes: in thee have I put my trust, take not away my soul.

  17. Custódi me a láqueo, quem statuérunt mihi: * et a scándalis operántium iniquitem.
  18. Keep me from the snare, which they have laid for me, * and from the stumbling blocks of them that work iniquity.

  19. Cadent in retiáculo ejus peccares: * singuláriter sum ego donec tránseam.
  20. The wicked shall fall in his net: * I am alone until I pass.

Amen.

I have cried to thee, * O Lord, hear me. ‡

Psalmus 141

Bring my soul * out of prison, O Lord, that I may praise thy name.

I cried to the Lord with my voice: * with my voice I made supplication to the Lord.

  1. Effúndo in conspéctu ejus oratiónem meam, * et tribulatiónem meam ante ipsum pronúntio.
  2. In his sight I pour out my prayer, * and before him I declare my trouble:

  3. In deficiéndo ex me spíritum meum: * et tu cognovísti sémitas meas.
  4. When my spirit failed me, * then thou knewest my paths.

  5. In via hac, qua ambubam, * abscondérunt láqueum mihi.
  6. In this way wherein I walked, * they have hidden a snare for me.

  8. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, * and there was no one that would know me.

  9. Périit fuga a me: * et non est qui requírat ánimam meam.
  10. Flight hath failed me: * and there is no one that hath regard to my soul.

  11. Clamávi ad te, Dómine, dixi: Tu es spes mea, * pórtio mea in terra vivéntium.
  12. I cried to thee, O Lord: * I said: Thou art my hope, my portion in the land of the living.

  13. Inténde ad deprecatiónem meam: * quia humiliátus sum nimis.
  14. Attend to my supplication: * for I am brought very low.

  15. Líbera me a persequéntibus me: * quia confortáti sunt super me.
  16. Deliver me from my persecutors; * for they are stronger than I.

  17. Educ de custódia ánimam meam ad confiténdum mini tuo: * me exspéctant justi, donec retríbuas mihi.
  18. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: * the just wait for me, until thou reward me.

  19. Glória Patri, et lio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  20. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

  21. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  22. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Bring my soul * out of prison, O Lord, that I may praise thy name.

Capitulum Responsorium Versus

Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lord's ministers shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them.

Hymnus

1. O kind Creator, bow thine ear To mark the cry, to know the tear Before thy throne of mercy spent In this thy holy fast of Lent. 2. Our hearts are open, Lord, to thee: Thou knowest our infirmity; Pour out on all who seek thy face Abundance of thy pardoning grace. 3. Our sins are many, this we know; Spare us, good Lord, thy mercy show; And for the honour of thy name Our fainting souls to life reclaim. 4. Give us the self-control that springs From discipline of outward things, That fasting inward secretly The soul may purely dwell with thee. 5. We pray thee, Holy Trinity, One God, unchanging Unity, That we from this our abstinence May reap the fruits of penitence. Amen.
